Big Blue

The last few images .

I still have a fair bit to do yet more deck lights winches and tidy and touch up all the paintwork.

But for now I will set it aside until I have all the running gear sorted.

Then start posting on this thread again..

Hopefully it will be all finished soon and sailing about.

In the meanwhile using the very same hull for another build
While not disturbing any of the fixtures and fitting on the deck..

Hopefully I will be using the same hull
and with loads of luck and no skill because I do not have any in model building .

However my hull is 54 inches long.
And been to the printers today to have a plan I Have enlarged to the 54 inch long scale.

So now have the full size plans and a small build manual.

The paper is 2 x sheets 8 feet 2 inches long x 2 foot 9 inches high.

So I may be able to follow the plan. I know the hull is a little different but it should in the end look something like the above link.

This is a long haul model for me but I will have a little something else on the go when I feel i need a break.

Nice work so far, my Brother had a similar idea, re hatch sizes, but he scratched built boat hull in 4 watertight sections, held together with rods, pushed pushed down from deck and using computer leads for Bow thrusters/lighting/radar etc. With all sections in place it could a large tanker, remove one section it could convert to a coaster, using Bow and Stern it became a large tug, all superstructure could be placed in any position on deck,even bridge section could be altered, by sliding it back and forth, back for cargo /oiler, forward tug. All this he could do in minutes, so looked it looked like he'd brought a shed load of boats to the lake. :-)

Another small amount done containers started and 4 fixed
Just need the chains for holding down sorting out.

As for the funnel logo Check out the next bunch of Bananas you buy in the supermarket.

I now have a solution to the second design of the hull using the very same hull.

all the upper sections are removable so I now will be able to make another top.

That will be NOTHING like this one.

A little bit more done

I was given the life rafts / hatches /and doors.
From a family member.
But still a little more to do yet including the Shipping Containers
and a few smaller items.
Just have to now look about for some stuff to make them from.

So far the total of the build is £ 11.00 including superglue. two packets x4 in a packet from the £1. Shop.
Every thing else is recycled from home or the local tip.
The tip mainly the paint A table leg and the fliptop bin That was the basis of the superstructure.

The mast a piece of wire one wooden chopstick a small length of 6 mm doweling and 4 rubber clips that fit to the back of a woman's earrings.

The cranes a small amount of Softwood timber that came as packing with a new tumble dryer plastic ladders and hand rails from a plastic washing up bottle Paint from the local tip large tin 3/4 full and two doors given to me.

Hand rails and window frames a little rough looking but o.k cut out of an old plastic sold sign found right outside the house.

Life rings old buttons filed and sanded.
and so on.

The mast is made and ready to go on.

There are still a few fittings to make yet so I am on with those when I have the time.

Also a few handrails but there taking some time as I am cutting them out of Plastic one at a time.

A few more little items now added.
And still a lot to make and do.

Another 20 shipping containers to make for a start.

As the superstructure is removable I was thinking I should make all the rear deck area as the same removable. I then would be able to make another rear deck with a different type of cargo
and another type of superstructure both to fit the same Hull.
Hence a few boats all using the same Hull and running gear.

Having the advantage of Not having to buy another hull or the electronics and motors...

Running gear and the electronics I have not as yet sorted anything out.
So will have to look about for that OR use the electronics and motors from the Ayton Cross tug as I made them removable as well.

Another wait and see thing I guess...

A little bit more completed.
Just finished the hatched area where I intend to put the two large cranes.
The black lines are wider than I would have liked but it was All I could find.

So started with a marked out area using household sellotape.
Lightly stuck down on the inside edge.
Then painted the inside of the sellotaped area with yellow paint Again Acquired from our local recycling Tip.

Removed the tape and Allowed the yellow paint to dry.
Then with a strait flat stick and a permanent marker set to lining out the black part of the lines.

With a thinner black marker the lines could have been thinner.
But it was All I had.

Also started to put some doors and a few other fittings on now..

Well I have now painted the top.
And stuck in all the windows. For the glass I used some old clear plastic fruit containers.

But afterwards noticed I could have had windows with a slight green tint by using some old 7 up lemon aid bottles.
Still maybe next time.

In the meanwhile again I have been making and painting the little bits that will be stuck on at a later date.

The superstructure or most of it has now been painted in primer.
Now I can see what needs more sanding and filling.
It could be a few days before it is dry enough to do more to as this was household paint from the local tip 50 pence for a near on full tin.

The large cut out in the sides of the superstructure is to house a life boat station on either side.

They have just been Finished to the best of my ability.
And need to be fixed into position when the top has been completed.

So I am thinking it will be time to do a little more on another model I have started..

So here are the two large cranes I have made for the boat.
Not sure where there going to go yet but non the less there made.
Between coughing and shaking I have at last managed to get them painted.

Also a cargo container looks to be about the right scale so I will make a few more later..
Again all made from scrap softwood and paint from our local tip.
The container made from a 1 gallon plastic bleach container and 2 small bits of welding wire.

The handrails and ladders were given to me some time ago so I will have to make a lot more myself later..

Just a bit of paint to finish on the life rafts that sit inside the superstructure and I will post those images as well later.

I the meanwhile back to the superstructure.

It is worth a good go and see how it looks.

When all is constructed I will be doing a lot of filling and sanding.

In the mean while I have been making a crane and a few other bits Oh and some containers as well I will post some images when I can.

Great job so far! I would put a Pilot house, maybe one that looks light the one on the Smit Rotterdam. and put the ships mast in between the smoke stacks. it's just an idea! What do you think?

A little bit more of the superstructure done now.
Nothing fixed as yet just thinking will it need another top deck ?

Something to put all the fittings onto..

As for the two funnels there the same as the Ayton Cross..
except for the top outlet they are tops off of some lung inhalers.

Impressive looking hull, superstructure looking about right, most of my earlier model are scratchbuilt, using what ever was to hand. Until quite recently all my hulls where balsa and ply board, progressed to plastic and plastic card these days. Welcome to an interesting hobby.

quite a few years ago I was asked if I could make a model boat hull for a friends son.

As then a laminator it was an easy job after making the plug to the approx specs asked for.

I made the plug and mould then cast a test moulding asked if i could keep the test mould and was told by all means have one.

The mould was handed over when completed and payment ect was made.
The test moulding i just stuck in the loft Not knowing I would ever start modeling boats so much later in life.

So Now I am into the model boats hobby.

Here is the hull with twin outlets for the propshaft.
And progress so far with the superstructure.

Approx 51 inches long 17 inches wide and a depth of 11 inches.

As I was paid to do the job nothing in the end belonged to me except the hull I was told I could have. In writing I may add..

Made a flat sheet of laminate and enclosed the whole hull on the top.
Cut out an area for the superstructure and as you can see I have started a rough looking superstructure.
I have no plans or drawings for this so it will go where ever it ends up I guess..

Apart from the hull I plan on using ALL recycled materials from our local tip.

Paint .Plastic and everything else...
The big idea apart from saving material from the tip is to make the model at the lowest possible cost.

Motors and some other electrical parts will be removed and put into this model from the Ayton cross So all the parts will be transferable from model to model. Well thats the plan anyway.
Guess I will have to wait and see how that goes later.

Prop shafts props and rudders will be new so NOT replaceable.

The timber so far a lump of 4x2 from the tip Free all cut down and sanded.
The superstructure I have used a large fliptop plastic white bin from the tip again £1.00
Superglue bought from the local £1. shop.

Filler and sanding paper I already have.
So I have started it.
I will update as I go along..
