They are bronze and we first thought they were trunnions for a bronze cannon but I've been told by a cannon expert they are nothing to do with cannons but I think they may well be axle bearings possibly for a forge cart that would be part of a troop of cavalry that were on board with their horses in the 1795 transport.

If they were bronze they would bevto sost to be fullers ,bronze goes very brittle if it is hammered when red hot ,best guess would be bronze bearings 2 halves fitting round an axle shaft

My ships haven't come in as they sank off Chesil Beach. I bought the rights to five 1795 shipwrecks and one 1888 shipwreck and used scuba gear to find artefacts from those wrecks. The attached photos are of two different size unidentified objects from a 1795 wreck that had cavalry on board so they might be something to do with a blacksmiths wagon. They are about 4 or 5 inches across the mouth. Suggestions welcome.

My SCUBA tanks got left behind when we moved and I couldn't get back for it as our old house was boarded up in 15 mins after we left and we are an hour plus away . it was old but it worked fine . I could have cried but likely as not it would have gone anyway when I got back.

I see that you both do not sail with or belong to a model boat sailing club so are sailing mainly on your own.

Most model boat clubs will have completed a risk assessment and produced guidance and club rules to protect both the members and public. if the waters are Council owned this can be quite a task and can result in permission being removed if not followed.
Waters are not easily found and can be lost because of the actions of one individual.

Whilst I can sympathise with the desire to recover a sinking/stopped or sunken model there are ways to do this safely. We have an RC rescue boat but I have also used long poles and fishing rods with lines. We also have waders to allow recovery from near the bank under trees etc as well as a boat and life jackets, if necessary, but not I suggest without having help on shore in case of difficulties.

You are of course entitled to risk your own life but this is a hobby for me and I suspect many of our members and I prefer to avoid unnecessary life threatening risks.

Yep I agree with you, the lake I test on varies in depth from1/2 fathom round sides to 16.5 fathoms in middle with hidden snags under water I wouldn't dream of going for my models. I always have a marker float attached to 20metres of 20lb line, just in case one sinks and I always sail within 30 metres which is an easy casting range for my telescopic fishing rod. Don't listen to the doubting brigade they probably haven't had to retrieve a model in difficult circumstances, any way I accept that someone will always grumble if you disturb them while retrieving, but better that than the loss of a vintage model as most of my boats are over 50 years old.

I used to go sea fishing with my Grandfathers; either off the pier in Folkestone or out in the channel in a small boat!

Tried river fishing once, and it bored the hell out of me.

You do know that it's recommended to never swim or risk your life for a model boat? (I guess I really don't know how deep the water is?) Do what I do; take a fishing rod and reel out with you and a couple of plastic or rubber practice casting plugs, and you get to hone up your fishing skills to retrieve your boat safely. it's really an effective way to reach your model... of course, not really if your boat is now a submarine!...
