I have just bought some cascamite from my local wood supplier today .

It claims to be waterproof and I have no reason to doubt that it is. This pic is of my rather old bottle but it still works fine.

Hi John, only between red n green! Apparently he saw them as tinted shades of grey 🤔 Anyway somehow it worked. He was awarded an MBE for straightening out the avionics on the Victor Tankers while Electronics Bay Boss at RAF Marham, and for his work as Avionics Liaison Officer on the MRCA / Tornado project.
Now you see where my interest in electronics came from. Funny, what he did for aircraft I ended up doing for naval ships😉

If dad was colour blind Doug how did he cope with the colours of the wiring in the sets ?👍 I know the Wrekin Doug Used to camp nearby in the grounds of Nash Court near a village which I think was Tenbury or TemburyWells and we did night hikes up the Wrekin and slept in quarrymen's cottages on bare bunks LOL I was in The BB until I was 18 finished up as Drum Major/CSM. The BB was affiliated to the NABC which is why we were able to camp there. I'm now 75 since 6th March Cheers John

I'm still using a little Nigerian walnut book rack stuck with poo-glue that I made at Wellington Grammar (just below the Wreakin!) when I was 15, now pushing 67! 😲

As I said Doug I could be wrong about the Spit. When I said was dad licensed I meant as a pilot😜 Cascamite was too brittle to use on metals anyway as was Araldite although it was actually used in some planes. Civvy jobs mostly I seem to remember. Fish glue Pooh. it certainly did but was actually quite a good glue.I think my teapot stand and toast rack were given to charity when mum passed away. They were made with fish glue joints and were still strong 50 yrs later.😉 Cheers John

Hi John, Dad was a Radar Specialist, one of the earliest I guess, so in that sense I suppose 'Licensed Mechanic'. He had originally applied for pilot training, wanted to fly Spits of course, but was colour blind 🤔
You may be right about the early Spit's control surfaces, but I also thought it was all alu monocoque.
Most of the Meteor flying was apparently due to a great friendship with one of the Flight Commanders at Tangmere.
As far as I remember, or he chose to tell me, he only actually flew the Meteor. Sometimes in the RH seat of a Mossie. Especially when there were intermittent snags that the crew wanted to demonstrate, that's why they called the early airborne radar 'H2S' cos the mechanics and navigators used to say 'It stinks!' 😲

Yep, the Hurri was unmistakeable due to the the stringers visible in the fuselage, never mind the 'blunt' wings and of course it didn't have the 'bubble' of the Spit! A more likely candidate for Cascamite I guess.

Was dad a test pilot Doug or just a licensed mechanic testing repaired planes? Did he fly all 3 ?Lucky man.👍👍😁 P.S. I seem to recall control surfaces were wooden on early Spits and covered in fabric. I could be wrong. it's not unusual.😁😜 Now the Hurri was a different kettle of fish (glue lol)and had a lot of wood IIRC. Regards John

The Mossie I understand but the all metal Spitty ? Gorilla Glue and a good exterior PVA I've got. it's really strong and weather proof .I use it for garden furniture making and repairs. Lost the label sorry so don't know the name.👍🤔 Any similar glue will be as good as long as it's an outdoor type. Used diluted it penetrates well and thicker has a good grab if spread thinly. I also use UHU hart,plain balsa cement,contact adhesive,a plastic glue and Plastic Magic which will glue any plastic I've tried it on, plus Cyano and lots of other odds and sods. They all have their uses if used correctly. Gorilla is good for gluing mixed materials. Their wood (PVA?👍) glue is excellent too.

Hi dennisw - I use both Titebond 3 (green label) and the Aliphatic Sandable Wood Glue which I get from Cornwall Model Boats (not the first plug I have given them but no connection, just a very satisfied customer). it is described as "quick grab, excellent sanding, shock & weather resistant, bonds porous materials, ply, balsa and hardwoods, non-toxic and non-fuming". So far it has not let me down. Best of luck with your build.

I used it a lot at one time bet if it gets damp it goes unusable I was told that it may cause cancer. I stopped using it because there must be a better glue. I also was told was used to make rescue boats & mtb.👍

Well Dennis. if good enough for the Spitfire and Mosquito then it's good enough for me. The reason I asked was because I thought I heard on the grapevine that elf and safety was trying to stop people using it due to whatever is in it. Might be totally off the mark here though.

you can still get cascamite look on e.bay I don't no if you know that it was used to build the spitfire & the mosquito in 1944.
