Classic Sailing Ships

HI Dave,

Thanks for the prompt and useful reply. I thought it might be J Class but the dimensions are not quite right. Also thought of 6M and A Class but size again not quite right. Perhaps other members know more?

As you can see no sign of any rigging ever being attached and mast (in two parts) has been cut off on upper end at around 5ft - I'm thnking more like 6ft.. Remains to be seen if existing built in ballast is enough. I'll take your idea on the rudder as well if it remains 'classless'.

Anyway I think it will make a good project. Regards,

HI Capt Jim
Not sure but it looks as if it may have been based on a "J" class racing yacht. Many hulls were also based on the Victorian pond yachts and yours certainly has the look of a early to mid 20th century yacht
My hull had a rudder arrangement similar to yours but I changed it to a sloping version attached to the keel. We have lots of weed in our pond and any form of unsloped keel gets cought.
I eventually removed all the lead ballast from the keel and made new shaped lead pieces that can be removed for transportation. Being so large the weight made carrying very difficult.
Unless you have wish to model a particular yacht I would use one of you classic plans. Chances are it will sail very well and not be as twitchy as a racing yacht.
A good strong cradle to support the yacht will help provide a stable platform whilst you rig the sails. 😀

Classic Sailing Ships

HI Dave,

this one is a bit long in the tooth, but having oly joined in February I'm still reading (and enjoying!) the forums - present and past.

I bought a GRP hull very similar to yours at a car boot and have been trying to find if it's a class hull or not.

Length 58.5" beam 12" and deck to keel 12". I thought it was a 70's hull but who knows? Any ideas? I have plans from classic pond yacht days (early 1900s) for sails and rig so if I can't find a class for it will use these.

Any thought or suggestions appreciated.

Regards,

Capn Jim.

Classic Sailing Ships

HI All
As well as my steam and electric models I enjoy sailing yachts. I'm sure my club site Is not alone In having low water and weed sometime during the year. Result - unable to sail any deep keeled vessels, plus difficulties with weeds In props. I have therefore delved Into pond yachts and find that they are not as affected by the weed, having a smaller shaped keel. My first attempt was a 4ft fiberglass hull that I converted to a gaff rig, based on plans In Model Boats for Monica - Dave Metcalfes Moonbeam Is similar. Proved to be a super vessel but not In strong winds. Planked the deck and made mahogany cabins. Am now building a Chris Brown model of Cariad a Bristol channel pilot cutter from the 1900's.
Does anyone else have similar experience and aspirations?
