propshafts lubrications . . . and other concerns

Hello friends,

Once again small branches have blown into the water at our “pond”.
Saturday, I was at the pond with my grandson and two boats had wooden parts wedged in and the drive shaft was slightly bent . .
Cutters Aline and Michelle (Commodore Graupner) now have to go to the shipyard!
The “Reine des Vent” is also finished and is waiting for a braided sail rope!
And I wanted so much to continue working on the Mississippi steamer; well, what the heck!
I'm retired ... and you have a lot of time on your hands if you're not married to a vacation technician like she!!!
I love my wife and that makes it even harder for me.
Greetings from a crazy hobbyist, your Michel-C.

When I build my Shaft Tubes, I make a 1" long oil tube at r
The front of the tubes and once per year I add 15 to 20 drops of 80-90 Gear Oil to the tube.

I just happen to have one of my boats opened right behind me so I took a photo of the "oiling tube". (I usually make my own prop shafts and tubes.)

The easiest way (with copper/brass tubing) is to drill a hole in the tube where the fill chamber is, and solder a short fill tube to it. I also make a cap to protect the lube from contamination.

As for the lube, I have used various type of greases and heavy oils. I found the best (and environmentally safe) way is to use petroleum jelly. Safe enough for skin wounds and gooey enough to work well in the stuffing box).

Easiest way is to have your tube fitted with an 'oiler tube'.
