He just followed a youtube, using a paint tin and a propane blowtorch amongst other found stuff. Only thing
he bought was a decent ceramic crucible, but your method sounds good. I was asking for some seriously big lumps and he was after casting aluminium, hence the casting sand and a cope and drag moulding boxes.

Sounds rather professional, I'll be making the dummy blanks from plasticine from my grandsons play box, then making a silicone mold as the lead free lead melts very quickly at low temp. Using an old saucepan on the barbecue soo gets results.
Cheers Colin

Oh well, if you can do that, Colin, definitely. it's just that most people couldn't begin to do that these days! I'm very proud of my son for building his own furnace and casting the lead bulb halves for my Vanity model cutter in his back garden. OK, I sourced the casting sand for him and made the cope and drag in wood, but only while he was getting the furnace set up.

I was thinking of making a mold and casting the lead keel weight (using lead free from a batch of material I got from the fishing shop).
Cheers Colin.

Ah, full of 'oles is different, Colin. I take your point. Can't help there I'm afraid.
Might find you can get away with steel instead of lead if you slightly increase the size a bit. Lead is a bastard to work with.

Well Martin, the cloth is full of small holes and when I tried to put them on the seams started to give way.
Also I think there should be some lead attached to the keel, there are hole in it and a feint shading difference about an inch wide along the bottom edge both sides.
Cheers Colin.

Hi Colin, my sails were so much worse than those, but I can't tell where yours are rotten. if they're just dirty, Vanish for a day or so works a treat.

Picked this baby up on freecycle, hull length is 19" with a beam of 4".
Will need a good clean up and repaint sails are a bit rotten so will need to be replicated. Mast and booms are okay, just need to be cleaned up before refitting. Now I need to find out what make and model it is also don't know what colour it should be as the person who gave it said it had been repainted at least twice in the last 25 years. Sorry but the app is not uploading photo's.
Cheers Colin.
