Hi Sam ,
Thanks for the response - glad you are willing to help - best place to send the scans is Ian Holdsworth in the UK - easier if you could scan the plan/parts. Ian specialises in restoring old plans - for Outer Zone & Aerofred too (model aircraft sites) - Dodgy Geezer ( DG he prefers to remain anonymous ) runs a few sites - Old Boats (where the plans are kept for free download) , EeZeBilts (free too), Taycol, Marinecraft (also free) and is the founder & moderator for the Vintage & Old Boats section of RC Groups. Ian will forward plans/parts to DG when completed. I collect where I can and forward to Ian. Ian's Email is IFH@hotmail.co.uk and mine is peter@osite.co.za - easier to correspond via email .........
Let me know what you want to do - have Ian's snail mail address as well if required

Brand New Website!

HI Stephen, having been around here for a long time! and building my 3 footer fireboat without any internet resources, just Pete Dimberline and Peter Henshaw, I am a bit sad to see the website opened up to any boat, I sort of liked that "club" feel we shared, being part of a small but specialised community.
I hope we dont grow too big and lose that very friendly community we have, in all my time on this forum, I cant remember any nitpicking or arguing between members, something that is a regular occurance on the bigger sites, best of luck with it though! 😀

Brand New Website!

HI Tom,

Thanks for your feedback on the new site. I can understand your reservations and you're quite right, it is a shame to lose the fireboat/aerokit roots this website has always had. if it wasn't for my Fireboat this website would never have come into fruition!

A little bit of history:
It was originally started in 2006 and at the time I had next to zero knowledge of how to create a website! But I got one out there, originally hosted by Yahoo on their GeoCities service on the domain name www.modelfireboats.co.nr

That was ok for static web pages but it's much more fun to have interaction and to know the content is useful to people. I remember the old forum at modelboats.co.uk being an excellent resource to which they shut down around 2007/2008. Nobody saw that forum again and a lot of people moved over to mayhem. Mayhem has now become the No.1 model boating forum, but it is only a forum that's interactive. What I've always wanted here is a website with other tools that have been built from the ground up to cater for model boaters needs.

People like to post photos, this was one of the first features introduced. in 2008 people had to email me the photos and I'd put them online for them. Now it's built in. And along with photos are videos, the two run in parallel really, so once again there is a function for people to do this. Blogs too, it was recommended to me to build a dedicated section for peoples builds. This has been a very popular feature, certainly to others who are starting new builds and want ideas. Now we have the harbour section, this means you will be able to reference your posts to your boats, bringing all the sections of the website together.

All these tools though, however popular have always been restricted to Aerokit modellers. Although I'll always be a fan of these boats myself it's a shame not to offer the service to the larger audience 😊 and what better a website to do that than one with Aerokit roots! 😀 I'd say model boating has always had Aerokit roots!... 😀

Happy New Year everyone!

Stephen

Brand New Website!

HI Dave
it wasn't 1969 it was 1959.
I did forget to add out of the 7 built we only kept 2, My one had an ED Hunter, and he had a Taycol Standard in his, dad gave the other 5 away to friends and even one I think to the milkman. The other 2, who knows, after leaving home in 1970 I never found out where they went. it was after that I went on to the Sea Hornet. I put a Enya 35 into it it went like stink. I've since got rid of the Enya but still have the Hornet which will eventually be refurbished.
So many to do, but due to a small thing called work, so little time to do as much on them as I would like to do.
But looking on Ebay at least once a week to try to find an Aerokits bargain, I often wonder if any of the ones we built way back in 1969 could possibly be any of them
Anyway I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and had a happy new year
regards
TOM

HI Boatshed
What a spendid collection of vintage boats you have. 😊 it would be great to see details in your Harbour on this site. 😀 .
I don't believe Stephen is abandoning his Fireboats / Aerokits roots more like he is opening up the site to all modellers so that we can all benefit from their building and sailing experiences.
The new member Harbour facility lets you post details of all your models and that alone may help anyone contemplating building a similar model, perhaps even making contact.
One of the great features of this site is the wealth of knowledge available and I know of no other site that carries quite so much detail on Fireboats or indeed Aerokit models. 😀
Opening the site to other types of models should not in any way reduce the Fireboat/ Aerokit roots rather it will become a source of knowledge and advice for all model boat builders. 😀
Come on Fireboaters what does anyone else feel about our new site?
Happy New Year to you all.

Brand New Website!

Its a great idea updating the website it look good. 😀 😀 .
But it seems a shame to add all the other types of boats, why couldn't they have just had their own website. I'm not against the other types of model boats
as I am also into other types also,ie offshore types of power boats, deep vees, cats, cabin cruisers etc.
It was just different to get into a site that dealt with the RAF Crash tender and the Aerokits in general.
I am now 61 closer to 62 and I started model boating at the age of 9 with my father and we built between us 7 Crash Tenders. Only one of them was an Aerokit model the others were copies we cut out from copying the parts on ply from both tea chests and old style orange boxes.
Since then I've been an avid Aerokits junkie.
I no longer have the first one built back then in 1969 but I have an Aerokits 34" I bought in 1994 when 50 were produced at ?50 on their 50th anniversary (still waiting to be built),
I have a 28" almost finished from reducing the 34" parts on my scanner. I have an Aerokits Sea Hornet 😀 I built in the 1970's.
Along with the Sea Commander 😊 , Sea Queen 😎 , as well as the 46" RAF Crash Tender kit that I have just recently bought at the wings and wheels show last year 2011.
The rest of my collection consists of the precedent Huntsman a seperate fibre glass hull I intend to build my own style top end.A precedent Percassa hull again to build my own top end.
Along with a 48" Hydrofibre Pipedream , 38" Hydrofibre interceptor,
48" 26cc Hobby Engine PT109, 48" 26cc Navicraft Outrage along with 2 x 50" bat boats. So I'm not against the other types it was just good to keep the Fireboats / Aerokits as a designated site.

I will still frequent the site on a regular basis as I have done for some time.
But I still feel that 2 sites would have been a better idea.

HI Stephen
The site is really working well. I use Google Chrome and found I needed to clear the cache on my machine to achieve the best responses from the new site. Navigation is very quick and pages load fast.
The new features are very welcome and will provide even more info for modellers once we all load up our club and model details.
Well done and what a great start to 2012 😀
Kind regards
Dave

Brand New Website!

HI Dave,

Thanks for your comments, music is now turned off 😉 the video intro is now optionally clicked.

Let me know if there are any other problems. That goes for anyone! 😀 I've done my best to test everything works as I've been going along but I don't have a team of testers! So relying on member feedback for the most. Recent tweaks:

- Duplicate Posts fixed
- Submitting Clubs now displays a miniature map
- Members list chopped to 50 per page
- Page request timeout added
- Online members refresh now every 30 seconds instead of 10 seconds
- Shop search overhauled

Still to come:
- Homepage Stats (Including map of members across the world)
- Linking harbour boats to posts
- Linking members to clubs

Thanks,
Stephen

HI Stephen
Yes the received messages are all marked as read. The sent messages are marked as unread and I can't find a way to read them so they are marked as read. However there are no unread messages so this may not be Important. Perhaps you could send me a pm so I can see what happens and advise you further.
The Fireboat site now changes to the new site and it certainly is quicker.
Good to hear we can post model details, I will be adding some of mine shortly. Rather busy with the Olympic builds at present so is not my main priority.
Kind regards

Brand New Website!

HI Dave,

I'm pleased to hear your positive feedback! 😊 it does mean a lot! The site should definitely be faster and less glitchy.

The new Harbour feature is ready to go, the whole site is fully operational. You are free to start using it straight away! Your posts will be displayed here too 😊

Regarding your 46 messages, I think that was only an initial thing? Messages are no longer archived, instead they are marked as read once viewed, so I Imagine it now says zero? Let me know if not?

Many thanks!
Stephen

HI Stephen
Just had a quick look. Am very Impressed. I am sure this will widen your audience as well as cater for all the Model Fireboaters out there.
Site loaded quickly and login no problem. I like the new Harbour feature - now we can all upload details of our other models - is this feature ready to go or should we wait until the site is fully operational?
I thought I had 46 messages! no doubt you will be bringing this in line with the Fireboat website.
Well done.
Kind regards

Brand New Website!

HI everyone!

Some of you may have noticed a few changes over the last month, particularly to the most recent newsletter which was a big clue as to what's to come! 😉

Over the next few days this website Is going to be given a brand new look, feel and fun! There Is also going to be a new website launched which will mirror everything on here and depending on how It goes, may replace this website In the long run. The plan Is to develop this website to make It less specific to fireboats and Instead cater for all forms of model boating 😊 thus opening It to a much wider audience 😎

Some of the new features:
- All posts will have a standard format and new emoticons!
- Pages will no longer refresh, Instead It uses AJAX technology. I know that might not mean a lot to most people but the website should be much more user friendly to navigate around! 😀
- All members have their own "Harbour" where they can list boats they own and post about (next step Is to link these to posts).
- You can now login to multiple computers/locations at the same time and manage all sessions on your "My Account" page.
- Posts will be able to accept certain HTML tags and special characters, so you can embed YouTube videos etc.
- Brand new "Model Boat Clubs" Directory
- Brand new "Events" Section
- Brand new Photo Gallery categories:
Ocean Liners
Working Vessels
Yachts
Submarines
Pleasure Crafts
Hovercrafts
Flying Boats
Racing Boats
- Overhauled newsletter settings
- Overhauled private messaging system

I am expecting a few glitches as with any transfers! So please let me know what you like or don't like about the new format! And certainly If you have any problems viewing the website get In touch Immediately with details of what Is going wrong.

I have tested In Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome. Internet Explorer users will not be able to see the members online footer bar but all other functions will be present and correct! 😉

I'd like to hear feedback from everyone, a lot of work goes on In the background of this website with the aim to make It the best model boating website ever! And this can only be done with the help of members, great content, great user Interaction and building a fantastic online community of enthusiasts!

Pass the message!

Stephen
