being as how you're in the US and I'm in Oz I reckon it is not much use me recommending a local Oz sail-maker.

From what I can gather from other fora (like that? My high school Latin does get some use) in the US a pretty good maker seems to be Carr Sails http://www.carrsails.com/

I am guessing that the cost of a set of sails for your yacht would be similar to those quoted for the Bearospace 'ANNIE'. $225 may sound like a lot but, from what I can gather, his sails are pretty well at the top of the pile. Check with a local sailing club, there are heaps of people around that make their own sails as well as lesser known sail-makers. The club may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks terrymiff! That is really helpful, and now I understand the function of one of the lines at the top of the gaff near the jaw. Would you know someone who makes sails? I'm not at all up on sewing or working with fabrics. Norm

Hi Norm, just an observation of the rigging. Apologies if I appear to be pedantic.

The gaff jaws shown in picture #3 should be below the cross-trees and the stays. As shown, the gaff would not be able to be lowered.There must be a clean run of mast from the boom jaws to the gaff jaws. Moving the jaws below the cross-trees and the stays will then enable you to measure the correct length of the luff for when you make the sails.

BTW: madeira means 'wood'!

I pried off a cabin roof and found a "builder's plate". The lettering is pressed into a piece of wood and was painted over, but I'm able to make out "madeira" and fragments of other words. I'm wondering if it originated in Spain or Italy and was sold as completed, rather than as a kit.

It looks a little like the Waverly sailing class, but a bit bigger... which suggests that it's designed as a keelboat from around 1900...
