Although I believe it was more commonly known in the navy as Number Nines, whilst in Army and Air Force the term Jankers was used.
Believed to have originated in the Army in India, from the Hindu "janker-wallah" one who does menial tasks.
Others say jankers came from the jangling / clanking of brass and kit when decked out in full battle dress for inspections.
