In view of the current number of Mainbrace Splicings going on perhaps better to leave it for tonight!🙄

Night Watch

To- Fleet Admiral. RNHQ Munchen

The Bristol Channel Patrol together with units of the LFG have today held a day of competition in whalers and RNSA dinghies in the sheltered waters of Cardiff Bay. Sailing races were held in both types of boats and pulling races in the whalers. I am happy to say that we were able to dominate the sailing races, but the crew from LFG Henffordd won every pulling race. Their stroke was a recently joined midshipman straight from Cambridge with a rowing blue.

A very successful day which I am sure we will repeat.

Must make this brief. Am running silent for the next few days..my daughter, err, Sea Cadet Grace has a birthday this Friday. I have been put on temporary duty as the comm officer in charge of migrating all data from her older Android comm device to a newly refurbished IPhone 6s. Although she has an inkling of what’s coming, she does NOT know the particulars of said present. Since this will take some time and effort on my part, I will be off the watch the next few nights...LTjg (Feline Sqd) Errol will be handling the watch for the next few nights. Will try to translate any radio traffic his station, if any.

Apart from curtailing our patrols this last few days, the bad weather has stopped the construction of our storage facility by the Alice Construction Company.
Everything was planned, the bituminous corrugated sheets for the roof were on order. They arrived as promised, but they delivered the wrong ridge pieces and did not have the right ones in stock. All that week was lovely roofing weather but nothing could be started, then. the following Monday, the right pieces arrive. And it has poured with rain ever since.

Maybe one day, it will stop.

To - Lord High Admiral, RNHQ Munchen,

Despite there being no drowndings and nowt else going on, the Bristol Channel Patrol put to sea today for a short foray down channel as far as Rhoose Point, the most Southerly point in Wales. Rough sea, wind 6 to 7 SW. Purpose of the patrol was to let crew recently introduced to traditional coastal navigation to practice taking bearings, how to allow for tide etc, how to take a running fix of one's course, use of landmarks, using a chart etc. However sea conditions were not good and returned to base after about four hours. Forecast for next few days is not conducive to much sea going activity. Training at base will continue as a productive alternative.

Hi Doug,
We watch a fair bit of parliament and other political programmes and couldn't agree more with you. In many ways, that's the most interesting thing on. What a rabble, years ago it would have been referred to as a 'Bear Garden'. Just hope some semblance of common sense will eventually emerge and there will be the right outcome. I agree, John Bercow will be sorely missed, he's brilliant.

Thank you for your comments and to answer your query, we are fitted with the latest geiger counters and other appropriate equipment.

We liaise extremely well with the two Welsh units, their skippers, Brinli on Y Mers and Meredydd on Henffordd and I cooperate on a programme of seamanship training which I doubt would be even dreamt of in other navies. All our crews are taught both semaphore and morse and we actually use them for communication at sea. We have two ex RN whalers and four RNSA sailing dinghies in which they receive extensive instruction in sailing, rowing and sculling with one oar over the stern. This gives them better small boat handling skills than if they only used the ships semi rigid powered inflatables. We teach ropework from basic knots to splicing (including wire splicing) and fancy ropework. They also learn the traditional Rule of the Road at Sea and basic coastal navigation. We feel our crews are far more capable seamen than many and better able to cope in an emergency.

I would suggest similar programmes are introduced in our other flotillas.
