Yes, I looked at the ham tins and visualised a push tug.

Yes, all to be done now is to finish the insulation, then do the inner wall covering in OSB. Then shelving and a work bench. My medical problems have meant nothing being done to the shed and for the next few weeks, looks as if time will be limited. All very frustrating.
Cheers, Nerys

Since we had to turn our spare room into a sick bay and put all the contents into a storage facility at enormous cost, we keep telling ourselves that whatever it is, we will find it when the new shed is finished and our goods can be brought home. Happy to say, Alice is at the moment, installing the insulation in the shed and light can be seen at the end of the tunnel.

Me too Ken 😭 Mine's not in the workshop so must be in the cellar!
Dangerous to disturb things down there!! 😮

If you can get hold of a large piece of tin Nerys - like an oil can size - should be able to post an article on one piece hull design in metal soon - good for a pop pop - waiting for a friend to reduce the size of the data file .......

I've looked at the videos on UTube about making them and think I might have a go. Seems as if sardine tins are a popular hull for home mades. but I'd like to do something a bit more shapely, complete with funnel etc.
Cheers, Nerys

Hi Pete, I don't think this boat is big enough to use more than one or two tea candles at a time, but I'll certainly try that. Actually in hind site I'm sorry I didn't buy a bigger more expensive popop, I probably will in the end.
Cheers Nerys

Nerys I find that using tea candles is the answer. They have a wick holder in the base which is the right size. Half a dozen candles will also supply enough wax for a very long time when melted.
Use the wick holder two ways either make candles by melting the wax over it in the candle holder supplied with the boat or fill the holder with Olive Oil around the wick holder. Think the oil actually burns hotter. I tend to make as many as a dozen candles at a time as the wick can be replaced by string when it burns out.
The boat should run for a long as the candle or oil burn.

My pop pop boat arrived from Ebay today. Sea trials in the kitchen sink. Chief Engineer Alice lit and installed the candle, after a little while some poppopping noises happened and the boat moved forward but only for a few seconds, then repeated and again. Sure it can do better than that, we'll have another go sometime, perhaps with a bigger heat source.

What a lovely collection of PopPops. Until we started to get replies about these I didn't think they were still made. I've just ordered one from Ebay, think it looks like the third one of your pictures. I can see a new collecting thing coming on!.
Cheers,
Nerys

These are a few I have collected over the years - First one was found in Johannesburg - a Rattandiep from India - used to sail right around our 10x5m pool quite happily (previous owner of the house was bonkers - pool nearly as big as the house) - it is in the front of the first picture still going strong after its repaint - the one behind is a Rani also from India. Second acquisition the one that looks the same as the boathouse one but in the small box was from a shop in London for a tenner - big notice stating that it was not a kids toy as it involved lit candles etc. Funny that - used to play with them as a kid - cost about a shilling. Since then have collected from all sorts of places - Son brought some back from India - sadly it seems both Rattandiep & Rani have gone out of business - and I purchased my last one an Indonesian made gunboat in Hermanus .........
Basil Harley made a big thing of them and there have been quite a few articles on them in model boats - all sorts of engines being tested - one even being fired by multiple gas torches if memory serves............
Great fun - pity they are not more appreciated,
I am still wanting to aquire a "Rose" boat but Alan Raubenheimer is now 92 and no longer makes them. Hope he will part with one from his collection.......
Kevin Doveton makes a fascinating steam boat with a tinplate hull where the engine in mounted on the vertical boiler with the propshaft running through the boiler.
As my neighbour wants to visit Kevin I may be able to bring back a few pictures.
One boat is missing - the tug whose larger than normal engine sadly malfunctioned from the start. Hopefully it will be re - engined someday...........
