Doug,

Don't think they, the RYA, could lower themselves to be interested in model yacht racing, but they seem to try to control everything else, oh for the days when they were the Yacht Racing Association. Having said that though, a number of yacht clubs, do have racing for model laser dinghies during the winter months.

Cheers, Nerys

Thank you for all the kind comments.

There is a long way to go with this project. It's been complicated with the current "lockdown" as Peter my co-conspirator who is the engineer whizz who has made tech going into the turrets lives 50 miles away. - He has the turrets and superstructure and I have the hull - it's been a little bit frustrating for both of us...

Therefore the project has been delayed but all will be good in the long run..

Smoke, flash, synchronised gun and atmospheric sound onboard & shore based plus a few other gems on the hit list - look out for future updates!!

The rotation and elevation speed is configurable. The kit that is on the test bed is not the kit going in the boat - final calibration will happen with new digital brushless super smooth servos etc

So cool, it's another aspect of the hobby that I had not considered!

I'm thinking about arming my sailing yachts... more than one way to win a regatta.

Thanks for sharing, really nice. 👍👍👍

Great Scott!!! That’s cool! So, I’m assuming you can “Fire” the guns while playing music in the background? Thanks. As if I don’t have enough projects going on, now I’m wanting to build an 80 foot ELCO with “American Patrol” playing as the .50s blaze away. When my wife asks me why I’m in the shop so much, I’m blaming you🤣🤣

Seriously, that’s nice work. Saw your guns video too, you have a serious skill set sir.

I think my previous post may have been confusing - apologies - the Jeti RC controller was simply included to show how a tablet could be supported.

There is no link between the smart phone / tablet and the radio control transmitter apart from being an ergonomic/useful support platform whilst in use.

The RC sticks would be used to control the throttle & rudder and the smart phone/tablet to control lights/sound/guns etc along with other accessories in a more intuitive and vastly cheaper way than some of the jab the stick X times or multi channel solutions.

My main intention was to show what could be achieved for less than the cost of a couple of fancy coffees.

Way out of my price bracket at over £1000, I'll stick with my clunky and old fashioned £45 system (Fly Sky 10 channel) it does all I need. However who knows what the future holds

Doug - I'll park this apsect of my HMS Rodney project here for now with one additional bit of information.

Cost of the hardware to provide infrastructure range 50-100m (excluding smart phone or tablet) from a little as £2.00

Veery interestink Jonathan!
Similar to 'Smart Home' Apps.
Although I'm not sure I want my fridge ordering up stuff while I'm not looking! Or 'chatting' with my microwave😠
I have a centralised RC controller for my lounge lighting, which doesn't have to send signals outside the house😉 that's enough for me.
Don't have to do everything just because it's (possibly) possible😁

How's the actual shipbuilding getting on?

This was an experiment I did a while back using my iPhone to explore a modern concept of multi function RC control - the current HMS Rodney control concept is a twist on the same theme.

Hi Doug,

You are correct the intention of this control method is for ancillary components only (not throttle or rudder).

The current implementation of RC multi channel control is klunky and old fashioned and just not kept up with what's available today.

I have got the opportunity to overlay a live video feed on the screen but it's further down the todo list.

There is virtually no latency with this system, you could use more than one control/slider at any one time - the radio packet payload contains multiple control values in each packet

"This is the control system that is slowly evolving"
Is this system going to control ALL functions of the boat Jonathan?
Or do you still need a normal 2.4Gig system for the basics and this just for the specials?

I can see some handling problems (finger troubles🤔) looming up if this touch screen job controls everything.
Ergonomics: Can the function buttons be used simultaneously, as with a standard TX?
If not we'll have to rename you 'Twinkle Fingers' 😁
And you'd better build in some video feedback and insert that into the screen so you can see where the boat is!
Good luck🤞, Doug 😎

I agree too - most of this is well beyond my level of knowledge.

I have just spent 12 hours working out how to update a parameter - I was 99% of the way there it turns out after 10 minutes but it took another 11.5 hours to find the missing bit.

That's how this has been written - blood, sweat and tears - and a substantial amount of lost brain cells.

I am no expert - just a very determined person that is never beaten by technology - oh and Mr.Google helps 😊

My phrase - "I think it's the way I have learnt most of my stuff - getting very stuck first..." holds true

Hi Escrich,

The is no application as such.

It's simply a web page created using html, css and javascript and resolved in a web browser.

So not iPad dependant - it could be any wifi/browser enabled device - e.g. other tablets/ smart phones etc - screen resolution would be interesting!

The radio link is a 459mhz packet radio

Hi Graham,

Thank you for your kind suggestion. Yes I have tried Glycerine @ many different mixes - thickest smoke i got was about 70% water / 30% Glycerine but it did eventually block up the coil and start black smoke production.

One tip I picked up was to add a dash of bleach(very small quantity) to stop incubating nasties in any part of the smoke system.

I have found it to be quite consuming trying to get the best effect possible - and a lot of fun as well as head scratching.

I have put this (smoke) all on the backburner for now as other aspects of my project need attention.

Have you tried glycerine as a smoker fuel? Just dilute it a bit with water to reduce the viscosity.

Doug,

The smoke is using "oil" as the smoke liquid - not sure I like the smell - it's pretty awful - gave me a headache within minutes - long term the model will reek even if the effect does look good.

I will be looking for an alternative I think but it will have to do for now...
