HMS Dido

Good evening,
I built a R/C model of Dido's sister ship HMS Euryalus details of which which appeared in the excellent " Model Boats " magazine of March 2017. I live in South Africa and we do not have access to hobby shops and suppliers of model ship components. As a result model ship enthusiasts such as myself are obliged to fashion all detailed components. Should you wish to contact me for details of my model of Euryalus, my e-mail address is pollitt@webbis.co.za. Kind regards Mervyn Pollitt

HMS Dido

HMS Dido was done by Glynn Guest for Model Boats Magazine, and the plan is available through Sarik Hobbies. It is a somewhat simplified design, with only one propeller, but can be modified for twin prop drive.

The superstructure is also very good. It might make a good start, rather than starting from scratch. Take a look at the rear ship in the attached photo. It is built from the Glynn Guest plan.
So many ships . . . and so little time . . .

Thanks for all the input. I am more a live steam Loco builder, and am grateful in that respect of the advances made in CNC ( although i am not in that operating league) and laser cutting parts to braze together is a godsend. I have been in contact with the Glasgow Transport museum who have a large scale Dido in their reserve collection which they said i can view with adequate notice,to take
pictures, and i recall another model on board HMS Belfast. I recall Dad doing cartwheels when he saw it, and last year when i went back on board , i did enquire and it had been sold to someone in NZ.
At the moment it is a fact gathering exercise both regarding the full size ship, i have the Ensign book on the class, and have ordered the 1/96 plans and Niaid book from Profil and have also seen a book specifically on Dido from Maly Modelarz. Luckily my neighbours wife is Polish!
My lad is getting a laser cutting machine and i believe it can cut plasticard.
That is another question What is the best material to use for the superstructure and what thickness
I can get brass in thicknesses of 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 and 1.2mm
and drawn the parts using a slot fitting method as i do in the Loco. Would plastic in these sizes be too fragile?
Once i get all the gen on what fittings i can get off the shelf to plug and play guns, turrets, carley floats doors, small armanents etc i should be able to keep the watchmaking side to a minimum,
And yes there will be a thread on it, once i can convince my wife that a 5ft long ship would look nice in the house!

HMS Dido

HMS Dido did indeed start off life with two twin forward turrets but was soon fitted out with three.

White Ensign do a 1/700 kit. This could be a bit fiddly but the cost would be relatively modest. Deans Marine used to do a 1/96 semi kit and Fleetscale Marine do a 1/128 semi kit too. Personally, I like the Fleetscale one.
The main difference in HMS Dido to the other ships is the cross-bracing on the foremast and degaussing wires around the hull being exposed. The armorment changed over time too so select the right date!
Good luck with the build and let us know how you are progressing!

New boy on the quarterdeck

Dad served on HMS Dido during 1944/45, and i would like to build a decent model of her to pass on to my son/grandson, before i fall off the perch.
Not really fussed to have a non working model, and it will be my first model ship.
Whilst i am hoping to use as much ready made fittings as possible, i am wondering if it would be possible to get a lot, if not all the superstructure laser cut. I have Autocad so no problems in getting them drawn out.
If anyone out there has done one of the Dido class, would like to hear from them with tips etc
Thanks in Advance

Ron
