RAF Crash Tender - colours & trim

I agree they really enhance a model and are not difficult, so I was looking forward to adding them, but it’s pretty clear the original had non skid painted floors in these areas, matching the main decks. Having decided (and already started) to do the main decks this way, I suppose I will keep going! I have done planked decks (and hulls) on several past models and agree they are often the best feature of the finished boat!

Hi Ed,
My experience is planked decks are well worth the trouble.
They are satisfying to build and look great. Use strips though not try to pencil them in. That always looks phoney
Good luck

Hi Doug. I did actually get this from mturpin013, but thanks. It agrees with the other summary from the RAF Museum. I think I will compromise, using matte dark grey for the non skid decks and redoing the cabin sides in a slightly lighter gloss grey. The other thing I note is the mid and aft cockpits are also non skid dark grey. I was looking forward to making (and have the wood for) a really nice plank job that always is a nice feature in a model! Not sure which way I will go with this one!

Hi Ed,
Back to colours!
Going through my archive (looking for something else of course😉) I ran across this from the Vosper painting instructions. See attached.
White Non Slip on the Cabin Tops!! Light grey walls, dark grey deck.
Cheers, Doug 😎

Chris many thanks for this detail on trim - could you please confirm which length RAF Crash Tender this measurement was taken off - as you have mentioned both 24" and 48" (?) models...….
BTW being an ancient engineer brought up with slide rules, I can handle any units of dimension from Rods and chains through to mm...….

My apologies I should have converted to Metric. Didn't realise you were in UK at the time

The battery weighs 4.7 lbs. It lays on its side to keep weight as low as possible. The length to transom to the nearest edge of battery is 27.5 inches.

I will check later. But I will say I have a 24” version and I had to move the weight fwd because water would pour over the stern at speed when it got on the plane.

Chris thx for the info. What does your 13 v duracell battery weigh? Where does put the balance point on your model. For example x cm fwd of transom. That may give me some idea to scale down to my 34" version.

I forgot to mention mine is the 48" version.

I have installed a 12v Duracell battery fwd under the Bridge. For good weight distribution.

Hi Ed,
I know you would like to get you'r boat correct, but at the end of the day it is you'r model and you can put any colour scheme you like on it.
And if you really want people to talk about it then pink should be the colour LOL!!

Martin555.
If it looks right it probably is.

Sadly I had painted the interior of my RAF Crash Tender before discovering this site and found that the colors are incorrect. Probably too late to change as the interior components are installed. The exterior superstructure is currently dark grey and I was going to paint the decks the same color. The windows are just dry fitted, so I could remove them, tape and respray the superstructure walls light grey, as the charts just posted seem to indicate. This is different from a lot of the models of this boat that I've seen. There seem to be pictures of the original where the superstructure is light and dark (see photos). If anyone can confirm if I should change the color or can shed some light on this, that would be very helpful! It looks like the decks, in most pictures, are a darker grey. My blog is Aerokits 1962 34.5" RAF Crash Tender rebuild, including interior.. Thanks

Martin, many thanks for sharing this - so white it is for the cabin tops !
Only the RAF could be such perfectionists in their specs !

RAF Crash Tender - colours & trim

Am progressing restoration of 1960's aerokits 34" 1/16 scale RAF Crash Tender with this rubbish winter weather. I currently have two issues:
1) The original craft seemed to have grey superstructure including cabin roofs - yet I see a lot of pics of models having white cabin roofs. Is the white for looks or did the original craft have white cabin roofs?
2) What should I expect to trim for adequate planning - I have Lipo battery located over propshaft entry into inside of hull - seems folks are put 8 to 16oz somewhere forward to improve planning - can anyone give me a balance point measurement from bow or stern that reflects good model planning performance as a start?

I will open up a build blog to upload and share restoration progress shortly.....Peter
