Tow Winch, keeping busy....

Doug,
Thanks for the heads up, I have been thinking similar thoughts. Most of my rescues will be sailboats at my local club. We all get a bit twitchy when a foreign craft approaches our yachts. We have learned to maneuver our sailing yachts to rescue each other with great success.

So here's the real deal, our local park/pond frowns on the use of anything but sailing boats. That and the fact that dingys are not allowed leaves a bit of a loop hole on rescueing disabled boats. I am looking for an excuse to have my tugs on the pond occasionally. How can the park rangers object to a well intentions rescue craft??

Now back to your issue. My thinking is a winch assisted crane operation to assist in the rescue. We will see.

I made a very good living designing and building things worldwide that "could not be done". That's all part of the fun.

"Final assembly still required and some lift tests of course."
I suspect that you are about to run into the same problem I did Joe, when I fitted a winch to one of the depth charge / paravane derricks on the stern of my destroyer.

Plan was to use it with a grappling hook to rescue stranded models.
Plan died on the first trial and winch was removed and consigned to the bits box.
I'd even made a home brew forward / reverse controller for it!🤔 Pics attached.

Problem; winding in the cable and hook - fine.😊
But how to run it out? I found that I needed something with weight like a can of beans to pull the cable out! Scale cans of beans made of lead couldn't cut the mustard🤔
Same happened when I tried it as an anchor winch. A 1/72 scale anchor cast from lead just wasn't heavy enough.
Good luck👍

Martin555,
That was my thought as well, that way the load is on the barge, not on the springer tug. Besides that would give me another project to build.

See photo for possible winch patina look.

Hi Joe,
I like the idea of a barge with a crane on it.

You could operate you'r springer to push it about then operate the crane.

If it looks right it probably is.

Thanks for the positive comments. Still a work in progress, I have been thinking about winches for a while, so my initial objective was to build one with stuff from my parts bins to see how it would function. That and to keep busy during the lockdown, again without purchasing any new parts.

Thinking about the next steps, maybe some added details and paint or weathering? Final assembly still required and some lift tests of course. I have considered mounting it on my springer tug or maybe a barge with a crane, who knows?

Ideas welcome....

Hi Joe,
That is working great.
Well done.
Will you be making a cover to go over the gears ?

Servo installed, set up for test, video is short as I am not very experienced with uploading videos.

Getting pretty close to finishing with the structure and mechanics. Tomorrow I hope to get the servo mounted so that I can do a video of it functioning. Tonight I held the servo in place and it works well, goes forward and reverse and speed can vary, nice servo. More tomorrow.

Mouldbuilder,
Did you get a mini-lathe and a mini mill?

I really enjoy the mini lathe. It did take about 4 to 6 weeks to get it right. Had factory issues with low quality control which is typical from where they are manufactured these days. Bad switches, two bad control boards, bad motor, etc. The distributor did replace all parts under warranty. In the process, I got to know the machine quite well as I tore it completely down and upgraded bearings, gears, tool support, etc.

Doug, The idler shaft and gear will live up to its name, my current dilemma is attaching a gear to the servo. Wish I had one more of the black gears, may half to use the spindley brass one.

As to the rest of your rant, I am beginning to be concerned with your mental health.....you need to get productive and BUILD something. Your creative genius is going to waste. ☹️

Nice work Joe👍
Given me an idea how to solve my 'gearbox' problem on my Billing Fish Cutter conversion as well!
So, you're keeping busy - so now get that slacker of an idle shaft working😁

Silly thought #1001! 💡
(Do I ever have any other sort? - A RHETORICAL QUESTION!!! Answers on the back of a stamped addressed flea if you must🙄)
Make another of those 'trestles', put a couple of planks across them and you could have a deckhand wallpapering the deckhouse - under the eagle eyed direction of the Captain's missus!
Logical follow on to Silly thought #1001: Use the servo to make the deckhand trundle back and forth applying the paste to the wallpaper😊
💡Or even better! He could PAINT THE SHIP FOR YOU!!
Thinks, Must be a No-Bell Prize in here somewhere😀
😁😂🤣

Time to get this thing standing upright, soldered the back legs in place. I am using an idler gear to transfer to the gear which will be mounted direct to the servo. Tube installed to hold this idle shaft. See photos of gears mocked up. Intent is to place the servo low enough that it is below deck...to hide it. See mockup with servo.
Kind of designing on the fly! More to come.

Not sure if I am posting correctly, maybe this should have been a mini build blog. But I don't know how to change it.

mturpin,
Thanks for the comments, I am rather new to metalworking this past year. I bought the mini lathe to get me started.

Some nice machining there Joe. It's always nice to be able to make your own fittings, I think that's what model making is all about. 👍

Hi Joe,
I think we all get carried away when we are model making and forget to take photos, I know I do.

Martin,
Thank you for the comment.
Will continue to build tomorrow, now if I can just discipline myself to remember to take progress photos 🙄

Tow Winch, keeping busy....

Hello, hope everyone is doing well!
With my boat builds stalled due to lack of a pond for some tests, I am always looking for something else to build.

I had modified some old servos for continuous rotation, but they were a bit quirky, so I had bought a Hitec Continuous Rotation Servo, HSR-1425CR. I liked the specs and it was a bargain for $15USD. Well now I thought I would try a drum winch to mount on a tug for fun and drive it with a CR servo. This will be an experiment at a small fuctional winch, not to be confused with the high quality, accurate scale stuff I see you guys and gals building!

First, looked through my junk for some parts, had some pulleys and o-rings but settled on a couple of gears as a drive. I thought that using the servo to drive it would be better to use a gear drive. Had plenty of scrap brass tube and rod and was itching to turn some items on my mini lathe.

Started by turning a solid brass drum spool core, 5/8" dia., then cut some drum spool sides 2.33 " dia. from brass sheets, soldered up to create the drum. Turned two wrapping drums from solid brass round, 5/8" dia x 5/8" wide.

Mocked up and started soldering a frame out of 3/8" round brass tube. Cross members are 3/16" ID to enable use of a 3/16" shaft. Cut out center cross member to accept the spool and shaft. Mocked up right. Will continue the frame work and gearing tomorrow.
Cheers, Joe😎
