Hard to understand

... And the rocks are smooth and gray

And all the woods and the valleys rang
With the Chorus they daily and nightly sang, —
"Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and the hands are blue
And they went to sea in a sieve.

Ah, Edward Lear!
"
The Owl and the Pussy-Cat
By Edward Lear
I
The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

II
Pussy said to the Owl, "You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?"
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-Tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

III
"Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?" Said the Piggy, "I will."
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon."

They don't write 'em like that anymore!

While trying to find one book on line, I found another I had forgotten I'd had, of Edward Lears' nonsense poems, this one printed in 1938. Only recognized it by the inside cover. Sadly that one has disappeared long ago (probably in the flood with the other one.)

Re - Apropos JB
The days when nonsense ruled Doug and we had fun, 😂 I read the 'Walrus and the Carpenter' and 'Jabberwocky' only a few months ago so as to top up my slowly depleting humour tank Used to have 'The Big Book Of Nonsense Poems' (original illustrated 50s printing) when I was kid but it was destroyed in a garage flood (along with my fathers' 1940s RNZAF gazette). Had hundreds of poems and was about 2" thick and was a real pity to loose them.
You will remember these ones from Ed Lear and Lew Carroll -

Long years ago
The Dong was happy and gay,
Till he fell in love with a Jumbly Girl
Who came to those shores one day.
For the Jumblies came in a sieve, they did, —
Landing at eve near the Zemmery Fidd
Where the Oblong Oysters grow,
And the rocks are smooth and gray .........

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe …

and hundreds more. Must hunt out a copy.

Will you, won’t you, will you,
won’t you, won’t you join the dance?”

Re "puerile adjective 1 of or relating to a child or to childhood.
2 childishly foolish; immature or trivial"

Would 'The Walrus And The Carpenter', or 'The Hunting Of The Snark' be puerile Doug? sort of fit the description. 😁 We're all getting old and need a laugh cos we're running out of time to have one. If we didn't laugh we'd cry, then we'd be sad, then we'd need a laugh, if we got a laugh we'd be happy ad infinitum. like-

why are fire engines red?
because there are 12 inches in a foot
a foot is a ruler
a ruler was queen Mary
Queen Mary was a ship
a ship sails on the sea
there are fish in the sea
there are fins on the fish
the fins fought the Russians
the Russians are red
fire engines are always rushin
that's why they're red

Puerile nuff for ya 😀😁😊😂 or-

News flash from Gotham City!
Batman and Robin have been plagued by middle aged obesity and have taken up a milk run, with Robin pulling the cart while Batman steers. " we get a few funny looks" said Batman, "but we do feel a bit put out when early risers refer to us as Fatman and Dobbin"

Nite all, lie back and think of England😁😂 and as Luke Skywalker said to Han Solo, "watch out for the WuhanfluHan"

I worked on the refit of MG in the nineties. She served until 2004!
Victorious went through a similar process.

"puerile

Considering the underlying danger of the current situation and personality of the 'gentleman' whose actions prompted Newby to start this thread, I would not consider it either puerile or political.
Rather more, expressions of our concern expressed with humour and some pointed wit.
I am neither Republican nor Democrat, not even American, maybe Jonty is?
All I want is to live in a safe world where I can go out, when I want, and peacefully sail my boats and enjoy my retirement without being bombed, shot by terrorists or catching the lurgy!

I suppose by Jonty's definition all Cabaret is puerile as well!🙄
But then Cabaret needs to be understood and thought about!

"You can't please all of the people all of the time,"
but I'm happy to see that we obviously please many of the people much of the time😊
Keep it up folks👍

Doug.
I concur with your comments.
If you go by the Oxford dictionary’s definition of Puerile then there are many Puerile comments on here, all posted with the good humour that they were intended with no offence to anyone.
The day we stop that sense of humour will be a sad one, especially under the current circumstances, and climate.
Keeps us young at heart oldies young.
Back off to the boat shed 👍👍

I guess we'll just have to take that risk Jonty. Although I don't believe that many of us share your opinion. Sorry you see it that way.
An 'excellent contribution' for your first post in eight years!?👎

use disinfectant as a cure makes me wonder if the man has a full deck or if his elevator goes to the top the lights are on but no one is home. But LETS Make America Great Again.

Unless I am mistaken, didn't Dr Mengeler experiment with injecting victims in Auschwitz with Phenol and similar substances. The result for him was a length of rope courtesy of the Nuremberg trials. A point to ponder!!!!

I try not to watch TV after 9 am about the virus so in the morning of the next day I get an update as to the news from the rest of that day and night and to my regret I found out we should try and use disinfectant by mouth or injection to fight the virus WHO EVEN THINKS THAT COULD WORK"THE DONALD". GOD HELP US.Some will try and do just that pray they think about it before they do.
Am I wrong in thinking this is bad on all levels that a man in his position can get people to try this .
