This is sounding like a GREAT idea! the plan of action looks good Doug, we just need to get members on board for the jobs you have suggested, Yeh! I'm OK
for all armament, and anything else we would need multiples off, I believe that most members will absorb
their own postal charges, if not, I'm sure we could have a members pot, and as for the guiness book, I
don't see why this couldn't be a record👍👍👍👍

Yes Bill, I know that archive, some good weaponry pics and drawings in there as well👍
Guess we'll have to go trawling😉
Nearly 5am here now, way past my bed time😮

Yes unfortunately you are right, pity it wasn't built on the Clyde, Glasgow University Archive Section has most of them now.

This is a great project

Hi Doug,
Colossus class carriers and their builders details attached. if we can find out who is archiving the shipbuilders drawings, we could get a copy of the lines drawing that way. Hope this helps, and if I can do anything just let me know.

Thanks Pete 👍
I'll see about drawing up a plan of action, 'Action Item List', then we can see how we can divi up the challenges😊
I would take Design Authority responsibility and hull / flight deck construction for starters.
Whose up for the Air Wing? Sea Fires, Avengers, maybe a few Stringbags?
I warn you, I would want lots of working features e.g. aircraft lifts😉
I believe Bill already has those covered😀
JB for the smoker?
Joburgsailor (Tertius) for moving aircraft on deck?
Graham93 for the electronics to coordinate all operations on the flight deck and lighting?
Pete, I could see you working on the AA guns?
All inputs and contributions towards achieving a long time ambition of mine would be gratefully received and compensated by items from my inventory of modules and components.
Not to mention my stash of around 60 kits! Mostly naval vessels: RN, USN, DKM.
Plus large hovercraft and an airship!!
Postal charges also reimbursed😊
An international Team effort would be really something
A Model Boats First!? Guinness Book of Records!?😉

OOOOkay!
Do we want to get a team together?
An International Project Effort would be real cool😊
Be just like 'old times' for me😉
Should I start another thread on this subject?
Don't want to call it Build Blog until we can see if it's viable or not!
First job would be to try and find a plan for the Colossus with hull lines.
Otherwise I'll have to try to adjust the Arl Royal lines I have to suit.
Will also take time to measure the whole damn kit☹️
But if that's the way the cookie crumbles ... wouldn't be the first time!

Man! Wish I'd been allowed to take a camera on board Minas Gerais🤔
Cheers, Doug 😎

Assistance from the members Doug???? Im sure all you would need to do is ask😊 I for one could make any detail work multiples you would need,(do a lot of resin moulding for our club) and I know other members have special talents.
'Ya know - It COULD be done🙄'
I am talking about the 1/96 Colossus, Wow! what a build 🏳‍🌈🏳‍🌈🏳‍🌈🏳‍🌈🏳‍🌈

Bill,
Eeeek Eeeek Eeeek Eeeeeeeek !!🐱🐁🙈
Which carrier did you mean Bill, Ark Royal or Colossus/Vengeance/Minas Gerais?
BTW: I also have 1:350 kits of USS Enterprise, Graf Zeppelin/Peter Strasser and Ark Royal.
Pete,
Since they've already started opening the gates to Hell here I would need the simultaneous assistance of half our members to even get started by the end of lockdown🤔

What are you guys suggesting?
The 1:400 Colossus kits or a 1:96 scratch? That's a BIG ITCH!!
As for Ark Royal I only have the (pretty poor) old Nexus (now Salik?) plan #1212 at roughly 1:192 (125cm), one huge sheet. Would look a bit piddly against my Hotspur and Belfast☹️
And my Graf Spee (145cm) would laugh at her😂🤣
I have no Colossus plan. Are you expecting that I start like I did with Hotspur back then?
Measuring up the 1:400 kit parts with a micrometer and scaling up?😮
Hmmmm! Thinks💡 Scale factor 4.166666r ...
Excel spread sheet to calculate dimensions/factors for a Corel drawing ....
Stitch printing on A3 ....
D-shell connectors between fore and aft sections ....
Four 8mm nylocked bolts to hold both halves together ....
Ya know - It COULD be done🙄
Snag: I only have the hull lines for Ark Royal though!🤔

Oh Jeez!
Yesterday I already had so many ideas and projects on-the-go (not to mention kit stash) that I was standing on the edge of the Slough of Despond and Indecision.☹️ Today, thanks to you two, I have taken a giant leap forwards!😮
Vote on it Guys👍 Your Admiral is yours to command! (If he's in the mood😁)

Hi Doug.
You have been threatening to do this carrier since you started following my HMS Victorious.
Would be a great plan if you did.
Are you a man or a 🐁 ......lol 😁😁😁😂😂😂😂.

"btw, The colossus carriers sound great, what a task that would be, to scratchbuild one at 1/96 scale. "
Oh lord! Don't tempt me Pete🙄
I once had a dream of of building a 1/72 WW2 Ark Royal. Escort ship would be Hotspur.
Then I realised that it would turn into a 12 foot nightmare!!😮
Cheers, Doug 😎
Thinks💡 A 1/96 Colossus at 7'3" (2.2m) MIGHT be manageable .....
Two chunks bolted together amidships .....😉

Yes Doug, your quite correct👍 she had a bad time
during here life, here's a bit of info about her......
Mountbatten’s time on board HMS Kelly was often dangerous and eventful. During one of her first missions – to escort rescue tugs from mines off the Tyne estuary, HMS Kelly was struck by a mine and she sustained damage to her hull and in the end was towed back to port by one of the very tugs she was employed to escort.
In May 1940 during the Battle of Norway, HMS Kelly was torpedoed and severely damaged and whilst being towed back was attacked by E-boats and bombers. The Navy Controller stated in his report that she survived “not only by the good seamanship of the officers and men but also on account of the excellent workmanship which ensured the water tightness of the other compartments. A single defective rivet might have finished her." HMS Kelly was repaired and was not fit again for active service until December 1940 and during this time Mountbatten led his flotilla in other ships including HMS Javelin – until she too succumbed to damage. HMS Kelly re-joined the flotilla and sailed for the Mediterranean with Mountbatten in command, arriving in Malta in April 1941.

During the evacuation of Crete, HMS Kelly was bombed and sunk on 23rd May 1941, with half her crew killed. The survivors were deeply affected by the loss of their ship. Their Captain - Mountbatten, shared their loss and tried to console the ship's company by reminding them that "we didn't leave the Kelly, the Kelly left us!"😐

Many thanks for that link Pete👍
Just watched the vid of the Colossus class carriers.
Special interest cos I worked on the Brazilian carrier NAeL Minas Gerais, the former HMS Vengeance, in the 90s. Upgrading the COMMS systems.
Six weeks in Rio plus several shorter visits for Patrol Boat and Frigate (Vosper Mk10s) projects. Great town, can recommend it 😊🤔
I recently found two 1:400 kits of the Colossus, I'll build one OOB as Vengeance and try to kitbash the other into Minas Gerais.😮
Cheers n G'night, Doug 😎💤
PS Looking forward to seeing Kelly, Mountbatten's ship wasn't she?

Thanks Doug for your comments, really looking forward to your build of HMS MANXMAN, she's a lovely looking craft, I was thinking of buying one from Deans, and building her as HMS ABDIEL, but still got HMS Kelly and USS KIDD on the build.😐

My pleasure Pete😉
Yep. My recon service had already spotted her in Harbour.🤓
HMS Belfast (125cm) is on her way!
After she's dealt with the Graf Spee (145cm)😁

Nicely put together Pete👍
Looking forward to seeing her underway like in the 4th photo👍👍
Thinks, must put the engines and C² system back in Hotspur🙄

Many thanks for that information Doug. No photo's as yet on the water, she's never sailed, but had her ballasted just before Christmas, so she's ready when out of lockdown.
She is a little smaller than your HMS Hotspur at only 132cm.
Z37 got rammed by Z32, what the hell where they playing at! was there no duty staff on.🙄
I already posted her on my harbour Doug, same time as this post.

Cheers, Pete

btw, lovely photo's👍

Nice work Peter,
That is the problem with models like this, lots of bits get knocked off.

"quite difficult to sail, has got to be calm water"
Quite true to the original Pete 👍
They were made top heavy by the heavy twin 150mm (6") gun turret(s) forward.
Some of this (like yours) and the later class had one or both of the forward twin turrets replaced for that very reason.
On the plus side, the innovative semi-tunnel hull and transom design, and twin rudders made them much more manoeuvrable than typical British designs of the time.
As built they had an armament more like an RN light cruiser than a destroyer.
Very nice job you've done there.👍👍
Any pics/vids of her on the wet stuff??
Deans; 1/96 I suppose.
Would make my 135cm 1/72 HMS Hotspur destroyer (a survivor, just, of the Narvik battles) look like a light cruiser!
BTW: Z37 came to a sad end. She got rammed by Z32 in 1944 and was declared Beyond Economical Repair and her guns were dismounted for shore defence. Her own crew scuttled her.
"On 30 January 1944, Z37 was carrying out exercises in the south of the Bay of Biscay with Z23 and Z32 when she collided with Z32. One of Z37's torpedoes exploded, starting a fire which set off some of her anti-aircraft ammunition and caused extensive flooding. She was towed back to Bordeaux, but the damage was considered too severe for repair, and her guns were removed to strengthen the shore defences of the Gironde estuary, with her crew being deployed as ground troops. She was decommissioned on 24 August and then scuttled. Her wreck was broken up in 1949"
Cheers, Doug 😎
PS Why not post this in your Boat Harbour!!??👍

Built from the Deans Marine kit some years ago, before our site began, quite difficult to sail, has got to be calm water, and at the end of sailing, you take home a bag of bits that have been knocked off, just getting the photo's today, I lost seven crew...😮 not lost, but safe in my pocket now, will glue them back tomorrow.

Cheers, Pete
