Masking Tape too strong or clumsy - simple solution

Hi Martin,
Not to bad but is about twice the price of normal crepe tape. Can be left in place I think for 90 days and gives a sharp edge but I wouldn't use it for lining.

I have only got the choice of Tamiya in SA
I have found another excellent masking tape that doesn't leave the glue residue. It is made by Sellotape and it is red in colour and made of plastic apparently made for the professional

Which is most expensive Tamiya or Frog, I think its Tamiya just check out the size of the role for Frog and compare with Tamiya.

I use cheap electrical insulation tape on the hull as it stretches and can mold to the contours of the hull plus it is low tack as it is cheap. I then mask with newspaper below the tape. Next is to give a quick spray of the colour beneath the tape/masking just to seal the edge and stop paint bleeding then I spray the other hull colour over it. Before the paint is dry (just a bit tacky) I then take the tape off pulling diagonally and this seems to do the job with me. You may feel a light ridge between along the colour 'join' line and if you feel brave and while the paint is still soft, wet a finger and gently stroke along this line just to soften the edge.

"Talcum powder, but you don't want much."
If I could walk that way I wouldn't need the talcum powder at all!! 😁😂

Oldies but goldies! (Like me 😁)

You can't beat Tamiya tape for lining (A reel lasts for years) It has an excellent edge and is low tack. Also if you can get signwriters tape also works

I mask my boats in the same way Doug does...Tamiya tape, then a regular masking or 3M green body shop tape and newspaper. I also use “Frogtape”. The yellow tape is for delicate surfaces, and it leaves a very sharp clean line and no residue whatsoever.

Talcum powder, but you don't want much. I use Tamia low tack tape when I mask stuff like water lines. But have use talc if I don't have any propper tape. 😊

""paint block technology" which gives a clean line with no paint creep under the tape. "
Same with Tamiya tape Mike👍
I use it to mask the edges, then cover the rest with a fine decorators 'crepe' masking tape and newspaper.
The 'creepy' tape is only stuck to the Tamiya tape😀
Cheers, Doug 😎

Hi
I would have a word with my local Auto repair shop, they use all type of marking tape.

Fred
That's all right, Mr Ryan. My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate of the Month.

Frog tape do a range of varying adhesions from delicate surface to normal and with an added advantage of "paint block technology" which gives a clean line with no paint creep under the tape.

Hi Nigel,
That sounds an interesting way of masking.

I suppose you could past the strips of paper first then apply to the object to be painted ?

Masking Tape too strong or clumsy - simple solution

I needed to find a way to reduce the stickyness of masking tape because it was pulling the paint away or the adhesive was causing some texture. I had already tried the internet for the usual ways.
So I made up a paste of flour and water. Just an eggcup of paste, like single cream.
They I brushed this onto the model. Using old newspaper strips I created my own masking tape and put it onto the wet paste.
If I need masking on a detail such as a dashboard switch (very tiny) I simply pained some paste over it.
Then I sprayed paint or lacquer.
The following morning I popped my model in the bath with water and left it floating. 10 minutes later the newspaper had fallen off, paste had dissolved and the model was gleaming.
I'm still learning
