To crew or not?

After adding a crew to Summer Madness lll I found some crew members for Ultimate Enticement. Two boats down and maybe two more to go.

To crew or not?

Decided to start with Summer Madness for adding crews. 1/24 scale figures seem to be the optimal size. Poor guy is outnumbered.

To crew or not?

Thanks for the comment. I have looked at model railway and farm sets but have not found any that I could confidently turn into naval crew, however very good for merchant navy, fishing boats or passengers.
Best wishes Tim

I'm of the opinion that the occasional figure helps tell the story of a given model. A couple of crew talking, a bosun splicing, or a seaman just watching the shore scenery pass by. I work pretty exclusively in 1:18 and 1:12 scale which ironically enough was dictated by having a 1:18 scale figure and built a boat around him. The 1:12 scale people come from action figures that undergo "plastic surgery" to accommodate the model. The figure in the orange jumpsuit was from the TV show "Breaking Bad", but is the basis for both of the crew on the 40 foot CG boat.

To crew or not?

Your post about 1/16 figures set me on a search and try as I might there were non to be found what a sad situation all I could find were dubious scale toy figures.
All I could find was a company called mountfleet models who I know make 1/16 figures but dont have them on the website or advertise them in the magazines.

To crew or not?

Like most members posting here I like to crew my boats but I am finding decent Royal Naval crew in 1/48 scale very difficult to find. I have tried to modify 1/48th army figures without much success. Any suggestions?
Best wishes Tim

I do have the paintings by Ken Marschall for guidance, and various photos to use as a guide, when I choose to start. I also have the musicians, but I don’t think I want to display the ship as going down.

Passengers for Titanic, that could keep you busy for as long as you want it to I guess.

To crew or not?

If it is an operating model, i believe it should have crew. My Trawler uses figures converted from a plastic fireman set in a plastic bag in the toy section of the local drug store. It was fairly easy to convert the fireman’s coat to the ‘nor’easter’ of the boat captain. Horsemen Faldo make good line handlers.

I think it is ok for static models to have no crew, unless they are in a diorama. I have a set of GMM PE in my “to do” pile that includes a set of passengers for the Titanic, which I am planning to install.

Hi Gillman.
Welcome to the site.
You may fined that you will have to get 1:16 army figures and modify them.

If it looks right it probably is.

While some of my models came with crew, I find it difficult to find figures in 1/16 scale. I build RC USCG small boats. I have a 41' UTB and a 44' MLB in progress. I do needa crew for these.

I think that a crew adds the finishing touch. There are too many ghost ships around. I also think the funnier the better.
I think your fishing boat crew are particularly good Phil.👍👍
I cannot promise to finish one project before starting another. I know, I tried.

Where possible I like to have some crew onboard.

Definitely needs to have someone at the helm, at least.

I know it's easy for me to say, with my room full of unfinished boats, but I think boats without any crew don't quite look right. It's that last detail that helps them look more realistic.

I would definitely have crew as it makes the boat look busy and adds more interest.

Trying to decide if I want to add a crew to Summer Madness lll or not. Looking through the Harbor photos, it seems some have a crew and some don't. Opinions???
