Great minds think alike Ron, I also installed an old cooker hood above a bench area which is exhausted to the outside. I use it for brazing ,soldering, spraying and any other smelly jobs😝

My shop too is in the basement. The room according to the house plan was to be the laundry area. It has a plastic laundry tub in one corner, hot and cold water taps, and a vented pipe to the outside for the clothes dryer.
I went to a recycling shop and bought a stove range exhaust hood, installed it and exhausted it out the dryer vent. This allows me to do soldering, some types of finishes that required ventilation. The exhaust fan has multiple speeds and the light two settings.

If we put a trailer on the back of a bike can we take our boats to the lake, and walk round it for excercise, or is this reserved for the P.M.?👎🤞

How cold is your workshop?

Here in Michigan (Northern mid-west USA) our winter is mitigated a bit by being surrounded by the Great Lakes. My workshop is in the basement. Keeps all the paints and such warm. But the wife says no to any spray painting indoors, so any large painting projects wait until spring. Have managed to run small bits outside as long as it's not raining or snowing and above freezing, it seems to work. The price we pay for domestic tranquility 😊

How cold is your workshop?

I'm very fortunate to have 2 of my workshops within the house, my engineering workshop is in the basement which is centrally heated and my modelling workshop is on the fourth floor of the house which is half of an area I share with my good lady who has her sowing room up there again the warmest rooms in the house.
However my garage which is my car mechanics workshop is absolutely freezing and not to be ventured into in winter

How cold is your workshop?

5 AM and 21C here at the moment and 28 odd in the daytime lately, (sorry guys, don't mean to rub it in😁) don't think I had a heater on more than a few hours last year (one reason is that power's dammed expensive!). Climate has changed a lot down here in the past few years, and can be too hot at times, (drought last year, then floods down south.) My workshop under the house is usually warmer than the house for some strange reason, but I have a spare room/workshop upstairs where I usually do the building and dusty stuff in winter (have to go outside to go downstairs,- a pain if it's raining). I keep all my epoxies, contact glues, cyanos and silicones in containers in the fridge to keep them from going hard.

I'll try and send a box of NZ sunshine up your way (as long as there is no export restriction) it has the worlds' highest UV content but you should be ok, (only risk skin cancer if you use too much, - just had a few bits of meat cut out for checking lately, - no worries 👍😁) Keep the vitamin c up guys and keep away from anyone who looks remotely sick. Know I don't have to say it, but now's the time to be ultra careful, with the cold and all.

I am in the same situation as you, I have taken over the loby along with the frezer to carry on with my Aerokit Fire tender model. No need to rush to finish, as who knows when we will all be able to get on the water.

Very fresh since it’s in our Basement on the North side of the House! So other than for the cutting out of parts I have permission from the Housekeeper to us the Conservatory for modelling activities . Not a heatwave in there but probably 10’C warmer than the Workshop!

How cold is your workshop?

Hi Graham.
I forgot to mention that in addition to the Calor Gas heater I do have a 60w tubular heater on the wall which I use juist to warm up cans of spray paint before use.
It's totally useless for heating the garage space though but enough to keep the temp in the garage above freezing overnight.

How cold is your workshop?

Hi Rob,

I’m with you, I don’t move all my paints etc indoors in winter. Not found it necessary, and SWIMBO would not be too happy.

I also have tins “popping” if the stove is going well. Acts as a crude ‘thermostat’. Damp down the fire when the tins pop.🤣

I have had tins of contact adhesive damaged by the cold. As I only typically have one tin, I bring that in and hide it somewhere warm!😉

How cold is your workshop?

Hi guys consider myself a little lucky l use my garage as my work shop. In there l have the central heating boiler and the hot water cylinder, during a cold spell the temp dosent drop below 12 degrees C . But during the summer it can get a little uncomfortable gives a great excuse for a extra couple of beers.

How cold is your workshop?

Hi Rob,
In SA we do get below freezing. I do warm up my Glues, paints etc to about 25Deg before use. Even then you shake the rattle can and you feel the temperature drop I don't know whether it is caused by the Gas or the thinners used!

Hi Geoff.

"I have part of my double garage partitioned off and is carpeted, insulated & heated"

I'm jealous of the double garage with all mod cons that you describe, particularly the hot beverage delivery service!!
Sorry to hear about the demise of your organ.....probably cold weather related too 😮🤣

How cold is your workshop?

Hi Ron.

"I hope you guys keep your paints, glue and aerosols inside warm they will not freeze".

In Canada that might be a problem because of your more extreme winters compared to the UK.
I've never experienced the problem myself and if I did bring all my paints etc. into the house SWMBO would give them (and me) an equally cold reception 😆.

What I do frequently notice is that when I'm in the workshop in winter and I have the gas heater on I occasionally hear the larger paint tins 'popping' as the temp and pressure of the air in can changes.
Anyone else ever noticed that?

How cold is your workshop?

I feel very fortunate when reading of what other people are coping with. I have part of my double garage partitioned off and is carpeted, insulated, heated to a minimum of 55f with hi fi and coffee sometimes delivered if I have earned enough brownie points. I originally build it to house an old Elka portable organ and huge rotary cabinet which eventually became unserviceable and so went to the local recycling centre. When I say portable, I mean if you had access to a Pickfords Van! Geoff

How cold is your workshop?

Hi Robbob,
Living the other side of the world. Our Winters are your summers, and believe you me a Johannesburg Winter can very very cold. My workshop is a separate building. A calor gas heater helps but 36square metres is difficult to heat!
And yes we do have winters in Africa.
This year we had no spring went from winter 13 Deg during the day to in the zeros at night.
Now in summer we have been hitting the 30's+. But the last 6 weeks we have had Rain everyday, making it very humid ( Paint doesn't like it!)
So I work when I can.☀️☀️🌩️🌩️⛄⛄

How cold is your workshop?

In my enfeebled state, I am very lucky to have a workbench at one end of the lounge, so everything is at room temperature. It's a bit cramped as I'm working on two boats at the moment, but by scattering stuff around the floor which is surrounded by finished models, I can manage. I keep all the tools I generally need in an adjacent chest of drawers and anything else, Alice will produce from the shed. I'd like a better more modern scroll saw but think I'd have difficulty fitting it in, so I make do with my fifty year old magnetal saw.Trouble is my health situation doesn't let me do as much as I would like and I get far too many days when I'm just not up to it. Alice does not complain because her hobby of restoring old radios takes up just as much space.

Cheers, Nerys

How cold is your workshop?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the sympathy 😀 It has been really cold for the past week. External temperature was -3C one morning this week and it hasn't been above 5C any day. I don't think it is any warmer inside the workshop first thing in the day. We still have snow on the ground here, although it has been melting today.

My workshop is a concrete pre-fab. Not a garage, but built from the same components. It has an insulated floor and insulated (leaking!) roof, but the walls are not insulated. It does however have a stove in which I burn timber offcuts and some smokeless fuel, (when I run out of wood). It does get it warm in there - eventually. It does however take a while to get to a reasonable temperature. I find it frustrating because I can't just go and spend an odd hour in the workshop at this time of year. I need to plan spending a whole day in there to make lighting the stove and getting it warm worth the effort.

Replacing the roof is on the priority list, once the weather improves 😉.

How cold is your workshop?

Hi All.
In a previous post Graham93 mentioned that his workshop is just about useable after two hours pre-heating, and I can definitely sympathise with that !!
My workshop (garage) is just too perishing cold to work in right now, hovering around 3 degrees C in the mornings.

I have a Calor Gas heater in there to try to bring it to a comfortable temperature but it takes an hour or so to warm it up (it also adds a lot of water vapour too!).
Fortunately I am able to bring my model indoors now that I'm just adding all of the details and fittings that I have pre-made, so I'm using my study as a temporary workshop for that.

No snow in my bit of NW London at the moment....yet ❄️😮❄️
