Smoke/Steam Generators.

Water based Smoke generator as fitted to one of my Corvettes.
Provides a good and constant flow for about 20 minutes.
Regards Bill.

PS.
I am unable to remember the make but was from EBay.
I will have a look and edit post if I can find the maker.

Hi One & All

I think that one of our member's has one of these in his tug, if it is then it is the best I have seen for smoke.
The photo shows it at low speed (for the photo)

There is still a post viewable which Mike T (mturpin013) did of his crash tender smoke/water system using the e-cig method (see under crash tender,- about half way down his blog,) and I think the vids at the beginning (on the pond) show how it looks in action. He used a timer module designed by Graham93 for a good effect.

I started with an idea I had about 4 yrs ago, for a simple system which would create smoke and water from model boat exhausts, (hadn't seen it done before). I started with a Heng Long smoke unit and a water pump, with a dual tailpipe system. I went on to try vape elements (suggested by Martin) in different containers which worked quite well, but used a bit much power. Graham joined the experiments and together we came up with a good cheap reliable and simple system, (Graham also came up with some clever electronic controllers)

We had it all explained on the site about 3 yrs ago, but it seems to have been deleted. I still have videos of the different experiments I put on YT from back then, so I thought I'd add some of them here. They are from the first Heng Long tank smoker experiments to large vape tank elements in different configurations and finally to some very cheap vape pens Graham found, modified to suit ($3 ea at the time) Last vid is using this system in my HSL, with water and air/exhaust and cooling water on each side.

You require a vape pen (modified) an air pump and water pump for this type, or without a water pump for just smoke. Also required is a cheap voltage regulator, as these pens work safely on 3V. A mixture of 50% water and 50% glycerine is used. Smoke volume required can be varied with the voltage regulator.

Graham and Mike have this type of system in their fireboats, and they work well. I have one in my HSL, seaplane tender, Hartley cabin boat and runabout. By using cheap timers, you can time the smoke/water to start with your engine start sound (if sound system fitted)

Everything required is available on Ali Express cheaply, probably less than $20 NZ per complete unit.

Smoke/Steam Generators.

Hi,

I don't know guys there are smoke/steam generators which are working with pure water not necessary any special oil for them. The other thing is the heat element inside some units.
I don't like the idea if something heated up in my boat, not mentioned if it is an oilbased something....

Yes you can buy things from the ebay or from the interne, chinese circuits etc, but you have to create a circuit (right components, because a 20V range capacitor won't be good when the peak-to peak values are higher then 80V, the same with the fet, plus you have to create the right supply voltage which has to be constant, because the NE555 circuit frequency is very sensible for the voltage changes) for it, you have to find the right frequency, etc...

There are many thing what you have to think of.

This is the reason why I offered the Denes Design Smoke Generator, because it is a connect and play robust unit. You got it, connect it, power it up, fill it up and ready to go, not mentioned it is working with pure water and creating cold smoke/steam/mist.... there is no heating element....

The design of a product like this requires a lot of pre-investigation, and design.
If somebody would like to play with it and spend many time just do it, this can be part of the hobby too, but if you need a good quality good running robust product just buy one.

Hi One and All
I don't use this form much now, but this popped up on my FB page, so here is my two penny's worth, I use a Simulation Smoke Generator for a Henglong 1/16 RC Tank, they are an oil type unit in place of the oil I have used smoke fluid mixed with mineral oil, this way you get a nice amount of smoke all at a good price.
Martin 555 has seen the video of my unit working.

You can get smoke generators from harbormodels.com. He has them in different sizes and you can vary the smoke with engine speed. I have one the very large in my tug and one very small in my truck.
He also has a very large selection of boat accessories and fittings as well as boat models. The 3D printed stuff is not so great in MHO but the rest of his stuff is good.

There are several blogs on this site with details of homebuilt smoke generators. Unfortunately, some of the older blogs look to be corrupted and the photos are no longer there.

Here's a link to my Crash Tender restoration which included details of my smoker:

Hello, I'm back. . .
Here are the promised pictures. This was actually my ship's paint, I used the same colours for the hull that were already applied before. Fits!
I'm still waiting for the laser parts my buddy is cutting for me, so it all looks "tinkered".
best hobbyist greetings

Ps: as soon as the stored parts are here, there will be more photos.

Hello Together!
Here is my comment on Dainesh info.
I have bought two units from him, the third will follow soon.
With Lew's help I have a special design for the ship frack Ex Bristol Bay made by him. There will follow some pictures of the rescue operation on my part here . . incl. mounting of the steamer, which is powered by water. cool thing!
See you later

Hi LewZ,

Graham93 and jbkiwi has posted on this sight on how to make smoke generators using Vape tanks.
I cannot remember what thread or blog it was posted on but if you have a good look around on the site you will find that information.

Looking throttle controlled is OK. I've seen some that work very well and are simple. Others that are purchased are usually expensive, especially when building several. Very little detailed information is published.

Smoke/Steam Generators.

Hi,

I have.
First you have to make a decision what do you want:
- a simple just have some smoke
- a throttle arm active nice robust like Denes Design has? (If you would like to build it on your own, that can be difficult, but you still can buy one this is the easy way😊)

Evening Black Shoe.
How right you are re the Engineers.
I well remember on my first ship back in 1972 RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Retainer.
She was by all standards an old girl by then and although powered if I remember correctly with a Doxford Engine on a single screw if we ran up to full speed (max 15 knots)Just made a nice ripple on the bow,but not enough to water ski off the stern.
She would throw out enough smoke to cover an entire convoy if we were at war.
The exhaust soot and detritus that blew out of our funnel was unbelievable. You would think we were burning coal 😂😂
Good days,long gone.

Thinking about this, it's ironic that we put smokers in our models to prove the stacks work. In reality, an engineer takes pride in how clean he can make steam, (with the exception of blowing tubes which is generally done at night with the bridge's permission. Often we'd change course for a few minutes so the blown soot wouldn't get all over our decks or heaven forbid get into the pilot house!)
There are usually stack mirrors installed on ships so the fire room can see up the inside of the stack how clean their fires are without having to go topside.

I don't have any video of "Fort Valley" underway, but here's a couple of stills with the smoker operating.
It's a petrol based unit that is controlled on a rheostat independent of the main motor RPM. (There's a "chapter" dedicated to this in the "Phantom Tug" build blog.)

Sorry Rick and any others who may have a problem opening.
I use Apple, but, you should still be able to open the file by tapping the file.
You should then get in the left hand corner of the screen a download arrow.
Tap on that and it should then show view or download.
Download it and it should play......Simples.👍👍

Hi Bill,
Your steamer work great.

There has been some steam generators on the site but it is interesting to see the different ways they are made and the materials used.

So I think it will be a good idea to do a Steam Generator build log.
It could also help guys that are new to the hobby.

Ladies and Gents.
Just throwing open a thread with regards to Smoke/Steam generators.
Do you use them and if so what sort/type.
I (hopefully) attach a short clip of one of mine in a Flower Class Corvette.
This is a water based one using the ever faithful nebuliser.
This one I purchased but have since built my own.
