Goodrington lakes are good, well, as soon as the pedalos, bumper boats et al are put away for winter
BUT .... when I was a lad, I used to sail my clockwork Triang lifeboat, ( think it was 14/6d )on the smaller kidney shaped pond, between the lakes, and the car park.
Went there on hols in late 80s and the council had just filled it in. The outer borders were still there, but brand new tarmac rather than water. Grrrrr.
You can still see the (grey) shape of the pond on google maps, satellite view, it is between the lakes and the crazy golf, and now has an oval track and bouncy castle.
Incidentally, my lifeboat would just go across the "track" area, but I usually put it on a short course across the bouncy castle bit.

Yes plenty of lakes in Devon. But all fishing only. The boating lake in Goodrington has hire boats on it can be used out of season.

Several years ago my brother lived in Bideford and sailed on a lake at Ilfracombe also one close to Bideford went with him once but as I have never lived that way I have no idea where it was will ask him when he comes home from holiday

There are probably lakes all over the country that would be suitable for model boats but are either unused or private property. On my home turf there is a fine lake in Swansea, which I am told was used by a club at one time but I believe the council don't allow it any more on the grounds of public safety.

Two weeks ago we were staying on a touring caravan site (Mill Park) which has a fantastic lake in its grounds, unfortunately its a fishing lake, but I don't think it would stop model boats being sailed as my own club (York MBC) sail on a private lake which is also a fishing lake and we seem to exist in harmony. If I go to the site again I will ask if they will allow model boats.

South Devon has no suitable sailing water ether. Very sad. Exeter MBC has a lake at Cannonteign Falls. Only really good for power, but very good for subs. Not good for sail to many trees & water lilies.

I don't think there's a model boat club anywhere in North Devon. I've never seen
a suitable lake in the area either. The nearest are probably Clevedon, Cheddar or Yeovil, all miles away.

Hi Nerys, it was a good day out and there was a lot more examples around the house of square rigged vessels.

Nice to hear of a decent collection of ship models, they are a bit thin on the ground around the country. I'm excluding the National Maritime Museum. Arlington Court might make a good focus for a short trip to North Devon in the campervan.

Too bad the display case has that centre mullion. If anyone has an opportunity to see the Thompson Collection of ships in the basement of the AGO in Toronto it is also worth the view. But the lighting is very poor, display cases are light reflective making photography nearly impossible.

I'm currently on holiday in North Devon and came across this unexpected collection of fine model boats when visiting the National Trust property Arlington Court. They represent a few of the many boats that crossed the Channel to Dunkirk in 1940 to bring back our troops, they are really finely modelled with great detail and finish.
