Suncoast Scale Model Boat - March 15, 2026 meet
Stunning weather most model boaters would be jealous of. Warm, but not hot! Very gentle breeze. No rain! But not many showed up. Wait 'till the summer comes" No complaints about it being too hot for model boats!

Anyway, I wanted to get back to my trawler with another video. This time on board with my old GoPro. Had some issues with the battery packs slipping inside the hull. I'm going to remove the one for the lighting as I don't use them anyway. Then I will add some fixed ballast in the bottom. The video with the camera (and waterproof housing) on the top of the pilot house made the boat heel quite a bit. Going to try for some more on board videos in the near future on my other boats.

Got the 4 minute YouTube link here:
I hope you enjoy it!

    Lew! This is great!!!
When you have a moment can you post a picture of the rudder and prop set-up you've used Elena? Or is it in your harbor or build blog? I have a trawler in my future.
    Many thanks!

Nothing fancy about the prop and rudder. The rudder pivot axis is about 35% back from the leading edge. This way the rudder forces more of the prop back wash to the side to help the boat turn sharper.

Light up the Night on the September 25th 2025 including safety cautions
Our club will be sailing at Spencer's in the evening with our model boats lit up. I have upgraded my Jimwilder Tug with an LED light from our Dollar Store ( $ 4.50 ) now. Did a few modifications to get it in the tug.Looks pretty good & should be visible.

SSMBC update: Dock upgraded
For over 60 years the "model boat" pond at Lake Seminole Park (Seminole, Florida) has been a popular place for R/C model boats. I know that is only a short time compared to our Euro friends, but keep in mind that Florida was not a well populated state 150 years ago.

Today, I was at our meet (not many ther, too hot) and I found Pinellas County Parks had moved the dock about 3 feet further away from the shore. They also added two safety rails on the corners of the floating dock (about 8' X 35') at my request. I must say they have been very responsive to my requests.

From my view I feel that this is one of the best natural facilities in the state, perhaps in the US for model boating.

Thanks Philuk. Me getting back to model boating is gwtting closer. I promised myself no model rc boats and rc tanks until my home is restored. Each day I get things done is a step closer to being active. This has taken a toll on us and is taking longer than anticipated. But, as we approach the end of this terribly hot summer that might be the turning point.

Your very lucky because up here in Hamilton Ontario Canada we have lots of city parks that have ponds for run off water but the city blocks them off post signs not for public use and warn about ticks in area becuse the weeds arn't cut down and there's no way to launch a model boat . So happy sailing P/S I never learned to spell properly sorry.

Weed Problems ?
Are other clubs suffering ???

Local BMBC member Mark did a great job clearing a large amount of weed from the main lake to allow the full size pedal boats and rowing boats to operate . Unfortunately further light "wispy" weed is still dethatching and presenting a problem for most of our members model boats.
Until the situation improves , we will be sailing at the Fountain Lake.
Thanks Mark for all your efforts !.

lighting
Just answering a question about the club run at night & yes some guys go overboard with lighting hope I can photo some of the more exotic lighted model boats. Here is my Gumboot Cloggeroo lobster model boat with a few lights . That name is a song by Stompin Tom Connors a Canadian song writer .

I try and keep mine as they would be in real life, this is just one of my tugs.
The reason they are so bright is that a few of the members of my old club could not see the duck house in day light, let along a model boat.

If you are looking for very low cost lighting ( that is not scale ), I purchased extra blinking bicycle lights that are battery powered. These are small cubes that emit red or white and I am sure others as well.

I just place it on my boat and let it go at my pond. They are bright and fun to watch.

Andrea Gail
The model boat club I'm in will hold a boats in the park at night on Thursday Sept.19th at 6:30 P.M. At Spencer's pool in Burlington . We do get a lot of spectators that enjoy the lighted model boats So I figured I'd better install some lights on my Andrea Gail the photo isn't that good but it will have to do for now. P/S installing lights sure is a pain ! And I'll take a few shots when it's darker.

Yard Sale Find
As promised A few photos & some members models in Spencer's pool Burlington. Some of the boats shown are from other model clubs mostly Toronto modelers so I can't mention names of members boats because I don't know their names. Still lots of time for sailing & the puffer still leaks so I'll put stuffing box on a steeper up angle above water line. I just love fixing a problem with my model boats.

Just a thought. Is your shaft log filled with a waterproof grease? I have a couple of models where the motor end of the shaft log is below the waterline. They are packed with waterproof grease which stops water incursion.

Photo shows construction of a grease reservoir.

Yard Sale find
On the weekend spotted a yard sale . The older gentleman had restored a model he had built but the cat got to it . So because of his age he had decided to no longer have a hobby . We talk about model boats & stuff & he gave the wood to me & the 3 models . Future Build blog projects Maybe but wood is always handy to have in case power goes out.

I think that cat might make a nice …Careful Ron there are cat lovers out there …

Instead of trying to rebuild it, maybe keeping it as an “After the Battle” of Cats Bay mantle piece.

I have a cat and she like to investigate anything new that comes home so I have got to be extra careful. I have jus bought a 3D printer and currently making a bench that is cat proof as I can just imagine her dancing on the hot table. Wish me luck. Cheers Ian😍
