40" Seaplane Tender, new build Z-5

First swim in the 'indoor test tank'. Floats spot on and has truckloads of power. may have to fit the 80T motors yet as it may have a bit much thrust with the 45T 540s, have to wait for 'sea trials' to see what if anything needs changing. Excess power is a waste I think, and it's better to motor and prop the model so full power is scale like, and not race boat capable.
Not exactly quiet, but have not oil filled the shafts yet and they are spinning at 12000 RPM( the 80Ts should be a lot quieter). Speed controllers 'chirp' a bit but there's probably only me to care about that anyway. Looking ok so far.

    Hi Jb,
You have done an excellent job on that model, And now that she has got a taste for water there will be no stopping her.
One step closer to the big day.
    Well done.

40" Seaplane Tender, new build Z-6

Did my 80km round trip to the 'local' hobby shop and bought a few bits for the model. Bought a block of balsa for the dinghy (which was carried on the roof) some Tamiya 6mm masking tape (thanks Doug, they even have 3mm), some 1/8" black Sig superstripe tape (going to try that for the boot topping as my hands are not as steady these days with brushes), and some brass rod to re-do the cleats. Dinghy hull is shaped, cleats are made and dinghy gunwale strips are boiled and bent.
The small cleats in the pic (on mould 'rack') will be cut in half and used for canopy hooks for the rear cockpit. (ripper 'donner and blitzen' storm just started - power's probably going off soon if it keeps up!) The black deck matting is textured art paper I found at the big local stationary store and is coated with very thin dope (to waterproof) and contact glued to the deck. Makes pretty accurate matting I think.

Re -I knew those original cleats would bug you.
And you would be absolutely correct Martin!, - see adjustment update😊 Probably be about 8" cleats, (scale size). Better now? (haven't glued them yet just in case!) Dinghy's about 7ft scale guess from photo, (most tenders here were around 7-9ft and mostly prams) The tender for Jaguar was either glass or moulded ply, (not a pram) but who will ever know, just needed a dinghy on the roof.

Re- bought a block of balsa for the dinghy.
Thanks Peter, it's made a bit easier when you have a great tool like an Emcostar woodworking tool. Has a belt and disc sander, table and band-saw all in a compact size. Makes things a bit quicker to whittle down and then you can finish by hand. Helps a lot with arthritis creeping in.

Small size adjustment to cleats (yes Martin, they bugged the hell out of me!), - not perfect but little bit more 'manly' (or personly to be PC😁) now. Doug will be happier too! Rubbing strips on the dinghy this morning and a coat of air freshener (see can) applied. off to the spotlight store to find some canvas look alike material for the rear cover.

40" Seaplane Tender, new build Z7

Went down to the Spotlight store and found the closest thing to green canvas possible and managed to get the rear cockpit cover made. Bit of a mission to get it done, but it's about as good as it's going to get. The cover hooks are made from the card of small plastic fairleads, sprayed black, cut in half and trimmed to a hook (not brilliant but was all I could think of).
Cover is made over a balsa frame and just drops into the cockpit, overlapping the coamings slightly (was going to try and thread thin elastic round the cover to actually hook it down but that's for later). Dinghy is almost finished, - waiting for the decal to dry for the boat name to go on its transom, and the gunwale rubbing strip to be painted white. Dinghy colour ( International 'rescue orange') is same as original.
Bought some stiff grey felt to line the wheelhouse sides, (and maybe soundproofing somewhere). Might try and make the rear wheelhouse side windows slide up and down if poss, (not bothering with the flip up hatches,- I know they won't look tidy enough and they're unnecessary)- a maybe later job . Just have those to do, re-do the boot topping, and 'glaze' the portholes and that should be about it, then next job will be 'sea trials' (if the rain and thunder storms will stop for 5 mins!😠), - not looking likely most of this week☹️

"That's why I've never built a model of a sailing ship"
Me neither JB, and I never will.
That was the first sailing ship restoration I ever did.
And it will be the last as well!!

Made the boat Boat name decal for the dinghy, and I also made an eye for a painter, and put a bit of white around the gunwale rubbing strip. Pics of the cockpit cover plug removed also.

Re - Wonderful looking model, a real credit to you.
Thanks Nerys, Should be up and running soon (soon as it stops blowing a gale and raining every day (spring just starting here) I have a similar problem re arthritis, thumbs have clapped out (due I think to dislocating both at the same time while unloading a big fridge off my mates truck years ago,- he had to hang me by my thumbs to pull them back out!)
Had a carpal tunnel op, right index finger's buggered, no grip, and I spend most of my time picking stuff up off the floor. Just takes a lot longer to do things these days with a bit more pain. Be nice to be 20 again! Pic of Matchbox cars I used to modify in the 60s (side lettering was done with one bristle from a brush) wouldn't even bother trying today!😂

Excellent jb, would not believe that the dinghy is a bit of balsa! certainly looks the dogs b**** when a bit of skill is applied.😐

Now for something silly. Who knew GM made brushed motors for boats? Thought I'd give a hint of Gm to the boat. Won't see them but just a bit of fun.

Re Are those the V16 Detroit Diesels ?
I wish Red! then she'd be faster than 22knots!! (but sitting up to the gunwales!!) The day someone makes square motors is the day we will be able to make a reasonable facsimile of an engine. Tried to find a plastic model of the Detroit 453 (thought of making a couple and running the driveshafts from the motors through them for a scale look) but there are very few even close model motors (especially to scale) around.
Mostly V8s (had the boat had Detroit 6vs or 8vs I might have been able to bodgey something up) but 4cyl diesel (or petrol for that matter) models are like lips on a chicken. An Aussie crowd does a reasonable 1/20 scale Falcon motor but that's a petrol 6 and the rocker cover's all wrong.
If I had used the same 28mm brushless as in my HSL I could have made a case around them and built something on that, but the 540 motors are a bit big. There is a scalish looking Engine shell with a 320? motor inside it on Banggood for around $30 but not sure how big they are, (no size description) - probably look good in a large slowish model.
Never mind, can't see them, just a bit of fun😊.

40" Seaplane Tender, new build Z 7.1

Couldn't resist the urge, had to put the bungee cords on, just didn't look right without them!. Found some thin elastic at the local $2 Chinese store which is about as close as i'll get. Cover is now properly tied down, but unfortunately one of the eyes pulled out, (I poked the hole too near the edge, -duh).
Aft portholes glazed (need cyno bloom cleaning off), boot topping's done (used SIG 1/8" 'Super Stripe) then promptly stuffed up the 'antifouling' on port side by trying to spray Helmar Crystal Clear on lightly to seal the edge, (forgot 'A-F' is enamel- duh again, had one of those crap days when everything turned to excrement! (re-do 'antifouling' above lower chine rail!!**%#^$# )
Had to rest what was left of the brain so went out and mowed my soggy lawn (now the neighbors are doing theirs),-"lead by example" I say.
Will finish bungey cord on back and Stbd side and I think she's about ready for a nice day at the pond, (I can't trust what I think though, I've proved myself wrong on many occasions!) I'll probably Take the MTB as supervising VOD in case of mechanical misadventure).

Good One JB - another source would have been the little elastic hair bands used by better halves to tie hair up - especially on little ones. Come in all sorts of colours and together with necklace clips make good scaleish bungee cords which work.......

Thanks Red, I managed to get a card with about 10ft ea of black, brown, grey and white for $2. I needed a continuous piece to thread round the cover without knots (although did get one knot as I changed my mind on where to finish the cord) This elastic is thinner than those bands (1mm) and the modified 1/2 fairleads only have about a .75mm 'hook' so the cord had to be small.
I wish I'd found this thin stuff earlier for other models, (aerials, lifelines etc- don't break if you snag them) Might be able to change those now. Also found some hemp/sisal string which will make good ropes when waxed, (got a ball of it for $2 again. This shop also sells my favourite cheap cyno - Shenqiang brand, in a plastic bottle, (again $2 - hobby shop same qty 6-$8.) I pour it in everywhere, hardening balsa, toughening threads in balsa or hard wood (tap hole, pour in cyno, let dry, re-tap - nice tough thread. Great stuff!

40" Seaplane Tender, new build Z8 99%

Sun was out today so took a few outside pics with cover on and off. Thought the foredeck was a bit bare so Knocked up a working Danforth anchor which will go on some chocks, with a bit of rope/chain to a spurling pipe., Can't go to sea without an anchor!
Launch day might be this week as the weather is getting better. Can't think of anything else it might need, so unless I find something I've missed, the next thing should be a video.😊😊😊
JB
PS. Knocked up a stand as well today, just needs staining.

Hi Red, can't really tell from the old Super 8 movie grabs my friend did, but in one, it looks like they just had 1 rope tied over the dinghy to the grab rails. Probably held in place by chocks as well. Think the dinghy was glass so would be quite heavy. Thanks for making me check the pics as I found I'd suffered a senior moment and painted the dinghy the wrong colour,😠 (should have been yellow)😮 have no Idea why I did that.
No worries, back to the paint shop today 😴. Can't do much at the moment anyhow due to the weather, (raining on and off and too windy) and stand varnish is slow to dry. Nothing major though. Just made and painted the spurling pipe and hooked some chain to the anchor ( will be able to feed chain down through pipe and pull it out to anchor the boat) and stained and waxed some jute string (candle wax and shoe polish melted in a tin on stove) for a deck coil. Glad I'm almost finished as I have a heap of work to do to the house over spring/summer, (paint roof, re clad an external wall etc)

Sorry, just had to! Anchor (working) on deck, spurling pipe in and working, and dinghy repainted the correct colour (don't know why I thought it was orange,- major senior moment!😁
This is getting a bit like the Mr Creosote sketch,-"just another little morsel" Still waiting for the stand varnish to set. Weather's looking better!

40" Seaplane Tender, new build. Finished !

Stand finished (no screws just dowels) Aerial wires made, (bit thick but will re-do them at a later date) Filled the oiler cans and the shaft bearings are a lot quieter now (not perfect but quieter) Now all I need is a nice day and some calm water, - everything's charged, tested and ready to go!)
Original boat pic added for comparison.
Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions, - always handy to have encouragement, different ideas and methods offered, as we can't always think of everything!

Thanks Rob (and Martin), will attempt to get some decent pics and videos on the water. Will take the Maiami 'camera boat' along and see if I can get some 'from the water' vids. Need to invest in a Go Pro as my small video cam is not that good, but at least gives a view from another perspective.
An FPV setup in the chase boat would be great for this, as it's hard trying to get both boats in position to take a vid while under way using 2 TXs.
