HARTLEY TOW VEHICLE, BOAT RAMP, HANDBRAKE TEST

I wanted to try the driveshaft brake I'd recently fitted and thought I might as well do it on an actual ramp. This ramp has around a 30deg slope so it was a good spot for a test. Tried it with just the trailer first, (don't want my boat model disappearing down the ramp at high speed) and it worked well. I've done another vid where I but a 3kg water bottle on the trailer to simulate the weight of the boat, and that also worked well (although it's a bit scary when 13lbs starts rolling down the ramp backwards.

Lost the trailer a few times going over a big join in the ramp ( forgot the tow ball lock nut) so had a few goes to get it right. I was surprised how well a piece of string round the driveshaft could hold that weight so easily. Only negative is that it's not as good in forward, (would need another wound the opposite hand on the shaft) but that's not as important as reverse control. Still waiting for the weather and tides so I can try another launch. This ramp's not bad, but a little rough !

HARTLEY FLARELINE, MOTOR MODS

Finally got a good day to try the new brushless motor. Boat goes 100% better now (if a bit noisier) 3s 25c 2200mAh liPo got a bit too hot, so probably need to up the C rate to 40 to keep it cooler (maybe install a fan as it's closed under the seat) It's pushing a 6lb boat with a 26mm jet with a 3000kV brushless so it has an excuse to get hot, (only got down to 3.7V/cell after that run, so not too bad). Runs with a more scale look now which is what I wanted. Took a bit of experimenting, but got there in the end. Thermostatic cooling fans for the motor worked well, and within 10 mins the motor was cool. Only used around 2/3 throttle so as not to stress the coupling too much (you can hear it protest a few times, - silicone tube slips slightly making it squeal)- automatic rev limiter😁

Sorry, vid is blurry again ☹️ (original's fine -HD) but something happens when it goes through my movie editor then to YT. Keep procrastinating about getting a better camera (or maybe it's just the editor. - More experimenting, this is getting tedious😐

Hi Ron, haven't spent a huge amount due to the fact that all the electrical bits are very cheap ($1 ea for a voltage reg, $8-12 for a pump, $30 ea for a motor (bought 2 as the first was not fast enough) and jet unit, $15 for the ESC, a few JST plugs and wire, $3 smoke pen, few lengths of silicone tube etc, plus balsa and f/glass, -probably not a lot more than NZ $200. A lot of things you buy of course like resin and paint, usually have to be bought in bigger quantities than you would use on one model, and may be used on other projects, so it's hard to work out an exact cost. I think the hull was the most expensive part, due to the cost of balsa and resin.

Mostly a lot of time, (hate to work out the labour cost on any model at going rates,- probably in the thousands)!

HARTLEY SOUNDS AND JET MODS TESTING

Trying the jet reverse bucket mods, engine sounds and radio, (wanted to see if you could still hear the radio over the motor.) Still needs a deflector fitted above the jet.

Hi Jb,
It look like the bucket will have to be a very close fit to the top of the thruster when using in reverse
And as you say a small deflector so that it clears the bucket in the forward mode.

Shame about the misty video.

Hi Martin, I've made a small plate to go above the jet which should divert the water away from the bucket pushrod, just have to glue it on and test it (possibly tomorrow). Most jet boats tend to have the same problem with back feed out the top as it's pretty much impossible to seal, because the nozzle has to move from side to side. Most of the Hamilton production jet boats had a large platform over the jet unit which stopped water splashing up the transom (see pics of some early Hamilton jet boats).

The lens on my small vid cam is stuffed and I really need to invest in a GO Pro or similar (when I win Lotto)😁 I Have a few other cheapies, but this was the best, until I somehow scratched the lens, and then tried to polish it☹️. Works a bit better at longer range on sunny days. May be able to get it repaired as it is just the domed protective lens over the main tiny lens.

Couldn't do much more on the boat, (waiting for stuff from China) so took my latest plane (finished early this year and never tested) down to the big playing fields for some high speed taxi runs. on the last run, it actually took off accidentally, (but very smoothly) before I was ready and ended up putting it back down quickly but bending a landing gear strut. I consider it very successful as I now know it will fly, and my wing construction around the electric retract was strong enough to bend the 4mm landing gear wire. Same thing happened with another own design, plane but I was in a position to keep going after it leapt off the ground unexpectedly, and I found it flew perfectly! At least today provided something positive which is always good. This is one I made from some photographs of a one off prototype. Had my doubts if the wing design was correct, but it seems ok.

You might be interested in these vids from INCAT Australia,- amazing ship. It uses the Finnish Wartsila companys' waterjets.

I just wanted to add a little video of my 44 coast guard cutter & I'm sailing at Hamilton Bay which is a bit scuzzy right now but beggar's can' be choosers .

Vietnam River Gun Boat (Pibber)

At last after 8 months I've finished my Vietnam River Gun Boat.
I've built this vessel using a made up fibreglass hull that pretty much measured up to the 1/9th scale with some modification that I wanted.
I will post photos of the build of the build over the next few weeks and answer any questions as they arise.
These pics show the initial hull modification underway.

Interested in your build of the Pibber River Gunboat. I have the Pro Boat version which performs well. Would like a bit bigger hull as there is not much room for normal size batteries.
Which hull did you use?
Also interested in the Patrol Craft Fast ( Swift boat)of the Vietnam era

here is my 2nd Graupner Carina ( after the 1st one I just wanted to built another one and Ebay supplied - again- a 'barely started' set.
Taking apart the glued wooden parts was a bit of a challenge. However, the previous owner used cheap glue and all the parts could be dismounted without any damage.
(will post more pictures of the rebuilt )

This Swede Johnson and his yawl and its captain, Popeye. Swede pasted away several years back, I wanted to post this in his memory. He scratch built all of his boats over the years and was well know for his leading edge designs like the US1 Meters and Marbleheads. He taught me to scratch build boats and sails. Yes, Popeye's arm moves with the acting tiller.

ESSO CADILLAC

I’ve always wanted to build a WW11 oil tanker of the type my father skippered during the war. it’s named after a tanker he left to go on leave. The crew didn't want him to leave as he would take their luck. it lies off the west coast of Scotland, the captain, a friend of the family, going down with her. it's not the actual Cadillac as it was an older ship, artistic license!

HMS Cadiz

My dad built this over a long period of time, starting in the '80s. The hull is fibreglass and the rest is scratch built from plastic card, balsa, ply, wire and anything else he could adapt.
Although he installed the motors, props and rudders he never completed the RC installation or tested it. I inherited his boat models a few years ago and wanted to "finish the job", getting the model on the water. After installing the RC gear and batteries over the last few months, this weekend was the first sailing outside the bath at the Valley Gardens boating lake.
Happy to report that it sailed really nicely, seems to be reasonably stable although I did restrict it to calmer times when the MTBs and faster boats weren't running !
HMS Cadiz was a battle class destroyer, laid down and launched during WW2 although she didn't receive her commission until 1946 so didn't see combat with the Royal Navy, serving with the home fleet. Due to the changeover in pennant numbering she was originally allocated R09 and later, when the admiralty decided to revert to the D for Destroyer pennant numbering she was assigned D79. To reflect this my model has D79 on the starboard side and R09 on the port side.
She was sold to Pakistan in the late '50s, and renamed PNS Khaibar. She was sunk with the loss of nearly all hands in 1971 in the indo-Pakistan war.

The Model is scratch built from Photos and profiles of the internet it is around 52 inches long and currently runs on two Graupner 700 turbo motors (14.4v) and dual Mtroniks 25A ESC (12v) running twin contra rotating 45mm props, this model can spin on its own axis like the real boat but does not use waterjets due to cost. Completed in 2017.

Whats a CB90

Its a Command Boat 90 originally built by Docstar in sweden and later also built in the USA under licence.
The boat has a multi role capability and has be used by the Army, Police, Coast Guard and Ambalence Service

Originally a Military craft for coastal waters and rivers with a shallow draft and powered by twin water jets this 15 ton Aluminum boat can deliver half a platoon directly on to beach heads via its landing craft type single man door at the bow.

This craft has excellent manoveraility and can crash stop ( go into full reverse and stop) in 1.5 x its length. No-wonder the american's wanted this boat.

Since one grandson had a boat with his name on, his brother wanted on too! This shrimp boat became Timothy's with a guiding hand from grandpa when at the lake. Tim is four years old.

Thames sailing barge Capricorn

Hi,
this is my last model, thames siling barge on its maiden voyage,October 2, 2016. Preparation for construction of barges - Fall 2013. I have not chosen according to what plans I will build. I bought plans for TSB Lady Daphne, finally I chose but I have other plans.
On the internet I found an information plan barge "Champion class" from H.I.Chapelle. Even though I had prepared and cut out the ribs on the LD (1:28, Loa 98 cm), I finally began to build a "Champion". Loa 110 cm.

Hi,
in last wekend I participated in the open championship Footy in South Moravia, near Znojmo .. in Vyrovice , Vyrovice dam.

The technique betrayed me, footy ruder servo burned during race. Then I participated in open regata with my barge Capricorn. it was my first race. my model also had the first opportunity to sail on "big water".
It turned out that I need to adjust the sails to add and manage a large jib servo.

Technique was against me once more..maybe battery collapsed after first round in second race.

At home I found..battery Ok , but something collapsed ..

Weather nice and hot, but the wind was very weak, so the models of the racing sailboats were the first ..

I placed on board Capricorn deck cam, but after about 20 minutes the battery was discharged, i did not expected it... and I didn't expect the battery discharge will be so quick...
