Tug
This is my first scratch build. I used hand tools and a jig saw to cut out the frame. and bulk heads. Keel and frame was cut out of plywood and the rest. of the boat is balsa. I out fitted with parts from various pieces I had pick up at hobby shops and suppliers online. The pilot house, stack and skylight is all hand made with wood and polystyrene fittings.
I downloaded the plans, altered the scale size and printed the hull and boat to scale. Again this was the first and I now am looking forward to another project.

That's a great looking model for your first scratch build - especially as you changed the size . Good planking job on the hull as well as the superstructure & detailing. You should post a build blog for your next project - would follow that

Brilliant job for a first build, particularly as she's a scratch build. I look forward to seeing what you build next with great interest.

    Cheers, Nerys

RC model Lulonga river tug
I built this model during four long years. my Lulonga is nearly whole scratchbuilt model (about 75 cm long) except the steering wheel and position lamps.
The model has a plywood and balsa hull construction ,plywood decks, from hard polystyrene sheets made superstructure, laminated with veneer. Sidewheels with skew paddles, two DC 12V independent electric motors with gearboxes controlled by ESC. Electric LED lights, steam sound module, sirene and horn.Tx/Rx 6 channel HK 2,4GHz.
completion expected in spring 2014

Palaform Griffon 600 RNLI
A 600mm long model hovercraft built from a kit using Depron polysyrene. Excellent kits and extremely light, quick on the water and very quick on polished surfaces such as sports halls. Contact Palaform for further info. Just Google them. Use styrofoam paint to decorate otherwise you risk melting the polystyrene.

The kits are made by Palaform Ltd see website www.modelhovercraft.co.uk This one is a Griffon 600 made from deprom. Very easy to assemble. Get the electrics pack with it rather than supplying your own.

Fran Oakey designed the Griffon 600 as a wooden model.
Originally called the MM600 it used 2mm liteply without any lightning holes.
It is heavier than the Depron version but will operate in rougher water and higher wind speeds. Takes the knocks better too.

That looks like a flooded road that the model is sitting on. Looks like the police there to control traffic!

Enjoyed making this superb kit from model slipway. Having to cut out the polystyrene sheets proved to be no problem. With 2 motors and bow thruster, thought it would be good for the steering competitions, but its a bit wide in the beam for our rather tight course. Working searchlight and rotating radar.

Scratch built SDM MkII tug 1/48 scale.

Hull started out as polystyrene foam and plywood. Started July 29,2006 and in the water by Aug. 11th for sea trials. Detailed over the following 18 months.

The model is powered by 12vdc using Graupner Speed400-2.33:1 gear drive, and the small Graupner Schottel drives #1761. Separate ESC and Steering control for each drive.

The Lighting is 3mm LED cast into clear, or tinted, polyurethane lamps.

It sails the Pacific Northwest, USA, homeport Portland, Oregon.

Thanks for the info. Simple really. Clear cast resin round a LED and a fine paint brush or even a hollow brass fitting. Brilliant idea. 😀
