Re: various comments from Gary Webb

Roy, as mentioned Gary prefers no ballast inside his hull designs, here is our discussion about the fin being steel versus aluminum.

Hi Ron,
More food for thought - Thinking your fin is steel, keep the fin as light as possible so that as much weight as possible can be dedicated to the bulb.
Considering weight, aluminum would be a better choice for the fin, if you have the ability to weld it or can improvise a way to attach it.
Gary

Give the fin a tapered shape, narrow at the bottom. This helps keep her center of lateral resistance as high as possible.
If possible, remove any ballast from the hull and place that weight in the form of a bulb (lead is best) at the bottom of the fin.
Shift the bulb fore or aft on the fin as needed to balance the boat.

Rudder response appears to be weak, perhaps due in part to the existing full keel of the hull.
Adding (maybe 2") depth to the rudder might help this, and check rudder movement. Try to have, at the very least, 30 degrees swing each direction.

Cheers,
Gary

Hi Gary
I am a visual learner, when in the classroom teaching I often said, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, as for me it is true.

Now, why subject this email, Physics? Because my math knowledge is very low, I never studied physics or the mathematical formulas used. So, when I saw your slides on how the force of the wind and the gravity forces below the water etc., my wife said, oh that’s physics! Having not studied it or the water distribution of the hull and weight, well, it does not ring a bell in my memory.

So, why am I tinkering with sailboats and creating my own models? Because it is interesting and a challenge! This sailing dory hull has similarities to your Emma, just the dory is an open boat. I will hide my rc gear under “ cargo”.

Do you have those slides from the video maybe as a pdf to send me?
Ron

Hi Ron,
I've always thought that a model sailing boat is such a perfect subject for study, offering hands on learning while having fun.
Would be a great project in any school. Kids (any age) could learn some math and physics without those words even being mentioned.
If you are allergic to math, as many people are, you can skip the math and still apply physics principles which are largely mechanical in nature.
Let it be fun, and humbly accept any help your wife might offer. Reward her.

I have attached the stability drawing to this email for you.

Re: Will Everard

Ok. Will put them in the post shortly- if you don’t get round to using them, pass them on to someone else!
Regarding future builds , I have two more craft on the stocks and they’ll be my last! My hands are next to useless nowadays so I think I’ll just finish these off then just enjoy sailing some of my varied fleet
Best regards

Re: Brass Tube???

You say I am pushing the mast into s brass tube? No the tube you are seeing is copper and it will have a sheet running through it from control arm to the main boom. Note pencil is pointing at copper tube.

Re: Adamcraft

Thanks Roy,

I think it may have been Roger that I met at the Mayhem weekend where the video I linked to was filmed. (I’m terrible at remembering names). The Adamcraft dinghies in the video belonged to members of the Peterborough model boat club.

My knowledge of Adamcraft is limited to the content of the MB article, but I do like the look of the open cockpit, clinker built dinghy. I’m worried about the risk of sinking but don’t want to enclose it as that will spoil the look. If Roger has any advice with regard to avoiding that risk, that would be very welcome. My email is g.royle321@gmail.com

Regards
Graham

Re: Inga masts.

Hi Roycv.yes you are correct now you mention it, its obvious. Not having been on a sailing yacht the mechanics are not clear to me. The deck fittings were on board when bought and i didnt add to them, but now you mention them i will add the cleats for reality,Ive had a look at the original yacht photos and they are not clear as to type. What would you suggest??.

Re: Caltex Lumba-Lumba

Hi Roy:
Send me your address and I'd be happy to pop this little motor in a small box and send it to you via snail mail. Let me know.
