St Albans model show

Hi Roy,
Is the St Albans model show the one in late September? Or is there another one I can't find on line?

Regards, Dave S.

Sail winch

Hi Roy you made the comment below do you have any further detail of these units
"I also use rotating sail winches where the string all stays inside the unit so no need to have a pulley and a line. You can choose how many rotations you need"

Re: Sail winch

Hi Roy
It was the point that the “string stays inside the winch” that was of interest do you mean it is wound around the two groves or are they contained someway
Do you have a picture or a link to the item

Re: Determining Ballast

Roy

Your Norderney and Condor use very short fins yet boast a good deal of sail square inches. Did you determine the volume of ballast needed for the sail area beforehand or was if a trial and error?

I got this from Gary Webb yesterday:
How are you with physics and science stuff?

I got this from a friend about the topic of calculating the amount of ballast needed to counter the wind on your sails to keep the vessel upright.

Hi Ron,
I don't have exact specs at hand, but that is about right. Total sail area (main & jib) is about 415 sq. in.

Desired angle of heel at a chosen wind speed is of your choosing.

This sail area figure is used with "Martin's formula for wind pressure".

This figure is used along with " heeling arm" length to give us the "heeling moment".

Weight of the ballast bulb is tailored to make the total weight of the boat equal to her displacement so that she floats
"on her lines".

The fin length is adjusted so that it provides a "righting moment" equal to the "heeling moment".

Secret stuff !

Cheers,
Gary

My mast is 24” Boom 12”

I figured the main to be similar in size to the schooner or maybe the Wianno Senior .
Both have similar length masts though the schooner has a shorter boom 12”

Re:Your build

Roy what do the sails look like for this new build, I mean the style, the size, and how much weight is the lead you are putting in its keel?

Re: Water test

I did a bathtub test which showed that the water level inside the keel pocket is about 1/8” below the bolt holes.

I took out 1/3 of the lead shot from the fin, the glue had not completely hardened which made it easier. I will put a wooden cap on the top if the curved fin once the glue has set.

Now, the remaining lead is in the bottom of the keel fin which is probably better going forward.

Re: Your sails

You must have some idea what the sails will look like. Are you going with a Sprit or Gaff set-up? Bermuda?approx ??

Re: Australia??

Peter Duncan lives in that country, he and I email regularly. I know Australia is a big area, his brother lives in Queensland and is being hit hard by the rains. Peter said in another area there are forest fires. Another fella in Australia Mal Fields, he posts on YouTube videos under the name “ “shipshape”. He and his buddies sail mostly Gary Webb designs.

What part of the country are you going to be visiting?

Ron

Re: Woy Woy

Hi
I looked up Woy Woy on Google Earth which had 20 pictures of the coast too. It looks very pleasant! Is the tide by his area extend very far from the shore?
