Decided to sail the Solent so took some video to share. Uses 2 Bhuler 12v brushed motors with 4 bladed 45mm PropShop props and 12v 12AHr SLA. Twin Electronize ESCs. Radio is Futaba 6Ex but I will probably change to the Taranis so I can get better control using some bespoke Tx settings to co-ordinate the props and rudder.
Lifeboat crewe had been on a night out so not quite vertical. Aplogies for the shaky video, it's difficult to sail and video at the same time.

very nice boat and yes it is difficult to video and sail at the same time ! try to get someone else to steer while you video !! using a tripod is best. Les Breame

Thanks for your feedback.
I was using a monopod so I could pan and follow the model. I agree the tripod works much better. All my fellow sailors were otherwise engaged unfortunately.

Recently built from an Aeronaut kit, this is a 1/24th scale Pilot Boat based on a German design. Powered by two 540 brushed motors with 3 bladed brass props it attains something like scale speed. The colour is Volkswagen Bright Orange, courtesy of Halfords and the non-slip deck is acrylic green mixed with silver sand then covered with a silk finish varnish.
The boat was filmed at an illuminated regatta staged by Bournville Model Yacht and Power Boat Club on their lake in Bournville, Birmingham

Hi Colin
Yes, I did brush paint the deck with an inexpensive acrylic.
The sand mix was trial and error. I started off with a thin mix and gradually added more sand, testing it on scraps of plastic, until I was happy.
A brushed coat of satin varnish waterproofed and added to the realism.
Best of luck.

My 1st excursion into model boat building about a year ago....steep learning curve!!!
Currently powered by 2 x 480 brushed on 11.1v, both motors independently controlled by 2 ESC but soon to be refitted with 2x 1000KV brushless.
Planes beautifully and with twin rudders turns on a sixpence!

That's an excellent running time for a fast model.
😀
It gives a great indication of what can be achieved with brushless motors.,
I'll have to try brushless motors in some of my fast scale boats. I only have one brushless powered model at present, this being the Proboat Blackjack 29 fast electric.

This is my newest project an Ebay buy of a delapidated HSL possibly used to advertise Model boat insurance at some time maybe 50 years old !. I have removed all broken, out of scale and incorrect items, removed old repairs and internal engine mounts. Superstructure is not too accurate but good enough to keep. I have noticed the keel is slightly twisted so will have to try and rectify that and the rear deck is going to be removed also as the adhesive is soft and pliable and there is no rigidity in the build aft of the superstructure. I intend fitting 2 x 12v johnson 600 type brushed motors as the original had 2 props. I have plenty of photos of the external layout but lack any detail of the open bridge 😟 . I think this will be a difficult project to complete hope I do it justice

My son's boat , started life leaking like a sieve and fitted with a brushed motor . The brushed motor did however serve the purpose of being a trainer for him to get used to the boat and controls . He now has a brushless inrunner water cooled and 3 cell lipo's giving great performance and duration . Home Surf is Needham Lake in Suffolk

I have a MFA Piranha almost finished in my shed and a MFA Spearfish I purchased from a model shop in Cromer. That shut down not long after I purchased it. That's still in the box as new. I intend at some point to put in a brushless motor. I have one already. I got both Motor and Speed controller the same as in the ProBoat 29" Blackjack. I already have the ProBoat Miss Geico that is a maniac on the water. So I'm hoping once I do the Spearfish that will also be awesome.

Hi Boatshed , Yes all MFA seem great boats . As for the Spearfish I have a Thumper Overlander in mine 2nd hand and cheap . if you want the wow factor in yours look to fit a Leopard brushless in runner as the result is fantastic . Look it up on YouTube couple of films of one ripping round a pond 👍

Finally Finished touching up the paint after it being unused for over 5 years and now working better than before, after putting a new brushed 280 motor into the boat. The boat is roughly 850mm long and 141mm wide and was built by my late Grandfather when I was little.

HI this was my winter project the hull was given to me by my son who got it at a car boot sale it had been on fire as it was driven by a petrol engine in now has twin brushless motors with 45mm props but going to put 50mm props on when they come as it needs a little bit more speed Built from a set of plans this my first go at this as I build from kits in the past cabins made out of 3mm/1.5m ply and some 1.5mm balsa wood . Hull was sprayed and the deck and cabins brushed with enamel paint.

I have to disagree when you say that brushless motors are power hungry I have one more boat on a brushless and get a longer run than with brush motors a lot of members in our club use brushless with good results

I agree brushless give excellent results and will outperform brushed motors any day, provided they are set up correctly.
Power hungry was possibly a poor use of words. My point was that brushless electronics can and do draw very heavy currents which LiPo's are able to supply, and are very light weight.
We use brushless on many model at my club and for performance and endurance they can't be beaten. 👍 😀

To put my touch to the lighting, did the radio antenna, put some flags. Detail is left with the box of fish that are rice painted with spray paint aluminum.
