As a follow-on to Grahams' comment on our latest collaboration on a smoke pulsing 'capacitor driven' device, we thought it was time to 'chuck it out there' and see what you think. I saw the vid on the guys warship with the very fancy gun smoke system a while ago and thought there must be a simpler way than the sophisticated and technical way he did it.
Having done press setting in my early days, I remembered that a big press we used to set had a hydraulic capacitor which helped get the ram moving (pretty much what electrical capacitors do for motors etc) I started with a common party balloon with no container and knew Graham would be interested, and it progressed from there. As usual, Graham has done a fancy bit of electronic control on his, with solenoid and timing and has it working nicely.
(just received my new solenoid which I will be adding in due course)
Balloon is stopped from filling by a micro switch to the air pump and air is released by solenoid at whatever timing you need (depending on how well your smoker can keep up). If the system has no leaks, the 'capacitor' can hold air indefinitely, ready for use, and will re-fill automatically, (pump only runs to re-fill) This idea can be modified to suit anything (guns, exhaust startup and run, steam to simulate steam whistle etc) Balloons of all shapes can be used eg -(long thin sausage balloons could be fitted inside a tube if space is an issue).
With a good air pump, the 'capacitor' will fill quite quickly and some good pressure can be achieved.

Always thinking of improvements and new gadgets Martin, which might be useful for new model builds. At least Graham and I have got it pretty much sorted, so people can do modifications to suit their particular models. Main thing is that these devices are cheap and simple to make (in basic form) which is the whole idea, and can give your model that little bit extra. Most bits can be easily sourced from Ali Express/ Ebay etc.

Hi Jb,
"these devices are cheap and simple to make (in basic form) which is the whole idea".
I fully agree thanks to you and Graham and your fantastic experiment.

Remindes me of berthing alongside just down from the Crescent city connection bridge, near Canal Street - I`m sure the "Precedent" steamer used to be there 45 years ago ?.

I like your paddlewheel “Mark Twain”!
The boats namesake is quite a prolific writer, and in his book “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” he talks about his time in England. I don’t know if you smoke cigars, but an interesting paper he wrote is more about the nature of people, “Concerning Tobacco”....this is a short paper. Funny, but oh so true!

Changed the piping around and modified the outer tube so the smoke tube now comes straight in the back, and goes almost to the end of the outer tube. The water now comes into the outer tube and flows round the smoke tube and out, stopping any suck back to the smoke pump.

Re Get the Patent first JB,👍
But how will I stop certain 'reverse engineering experts' 😉 copying it Doug. Perhaps call it a vape machine to put them off the scent😀? 'Thinks' blast! I've already told them how I did it. Never mind, now we'll soon be able to buy one off Ali Express. Once had an idea for a pen with a triangular letter opener on the top end. Years later I went to a pop-up Chinese nic nac sale in a rented warehouse, and guess what was there??!!!☹️ They are obviously employing psychics to walk around jotting down peoples' ideas😮
I also still have 5th form (1968) sketches I did for a hybrid go-kart using a Briggs and Stratton motor driving 2 alternators charging twin 12v batteries driving electric motors on the back wheels with chain reduction drives, WHO KNEW???

Found a sound by accident which sounds quite a bit like the sound of the GM Detroit 453 2 stroke diesels fitted to this boat (still has these today) Vid from cockpit is the sound I discovered while mucking around with some old electric motors, and my new voltage controllers which just turned up.
I'll add the link to the real engine for comparison (next post here). Sounds to be revving really high but being 2 stroke it's only doing around 2800 rpm!

And the prize goes to..., perhaps if I (thr) hum along Doug?😊 (see reply to Martin for answer) It's real hard to get just the right sound to match a model (the sound units I have are not too bad) but there must be ways of doing it without having to spend lots of money on complicated sound units with set programmed sounds. In the case of my sound units, they are real engine sounds, programmed to be proportional on internal SD card but they don't quite match the model). A lot depends on the internal volume of the model (resonator), sound unit and speaker/placement.
The search will continue for a cheap alternative.

This is a 1984 re-issue of a Lindberg Chris Craft Sport fishermen purchased used on Ebay. Some of the parts where broken and some partially assembled. The model did come with 2 MACK RC motors and some fabricated wood parts, including a template for the aft deck. The interior was assembled from quarter scale doll house items except for the dinette. There are 4 underwater LED bulbs with a dedicated power supply. The running, interior and radar unit are powered by a separate systems from the hull electrics. The second Li-po battery is for backup and balast. There are number of additional items added since these photos were taken including a stern seat and larger radar array .

Ahoy Maties! it's been a long time since my last posting. Happy 2019! I just completed my new scratch-built boat "Electric Barbarella". I tried to recreate (with some liberties) one of my favorite boats of all time, the 30-footer Chris Craft Sportsman built during the 1970s. it measures 24 X 8.5 inches. it is powered with a 9.6 NiMH 4200 mAh battery "nunchuck" pack (like the one used for paintball guns), brushless motor attached to a 30A Mtroniks Hydra controller and a 30mm M4 3-bladed brass propeller. The hull (my own on-the-go design) was made out of Balsa wood which later I fiberglassed. For the superstructure I utilized 2mm ABS plastic sheet material. To my surprise the boat turned to be a very stable and forgiving platform. I really feel a very close connection to this vessel as it is my first own hull design.😁

I really feel a very close connection to this vessel as it is my first own hull design.\ud83d\ude01","subject":"Electric Barbarella","media":[{"id":"1546258291","name":"1546258291.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258291/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258291/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258322","name":"1546258322.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258322/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258322/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258351","name":"1546258351.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258351/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258351/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258348","name":"1546258348.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258348/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258348/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258374","name":"1546258374.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258374/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258374/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258384","name":"1546258384.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258384/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258384/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258461","name":"1546258461.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258461/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258461/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258501","name":"1546258501.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258501/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258501/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258557","name":"1546258557.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258557/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258557/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258582","name":"1546258582.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258582/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258582/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258561","name":"1546258561.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258561/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258561/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258606","name":"1546258606.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258606/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258606/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258665","name":"1546258665.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258665/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258665/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546258582","name":"1546258582.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258582/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546258582/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546259550","name":"1546259550.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546259550/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546259550/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546259586","name":"1546259586.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546259586/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546259586/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"},{"id":"1546259610","name":"1546259610.jpg","caption":"","url":"https://hobby.land/media/1546259610/l","thumbUrl":"https://hobby.land/media/1546259610/s","isImage":true,"ext":"jpg"}],"youtubeUrl":""}
She's a beauty!!! (And I am not talking about only the lady in the cockpit!)
I grew up a block away from the river, and there were a lot of pleasure craft in the area. Most of them were pre-70's as I left before then.

This yacht was purchased on a whim ? i spotted it for sail locally and thought it was about 30 inches high.
i had a shock on collection as its over 40 inches high and 3foot long.lt needed some attention to the electrics and transmitter and a lot of tlc. i think its big enough for my jack russell to curcumnavigate the world single footed !

Only 2nd run of "IMARA Tug", my lad did the shaky video. (O well)
Nice model lots of ballast, batteries, MARX Hectoperm motor for huge power reserve. Running on electric but Cheddar Proteus steam plant also fits in instead with ABC boiler control. plan for the future to try this never run not even on air yet!

"these devices are cheap and simple to make (in basic form) which is the whole idea".
I fully agree thanks to you and Graham and your fantastic experiment.
