HI all, I was given this model in a rather sad state as it had been in a junk box in a farm out-building and had been subjected to the weather from time to time . it had been there for about 20 yrs or more and the balsa hull was 60% rotten . I think it was originally IC powered but had been fitted with a Graupner Jumbo 6v motor and an old style rheostatic sc, ( I did try using the sc but it sucked so much power I gave it a miss - also had no reverse)
Amazingly the motor and sc still worked and with a bit of oil and cleaning the motor is still running well ! I'm using a 1975 Futaba 24v 10A sc and 3cell LiPo which pushes it along nicely. I stripped everything and replaced large bits of the hull, (which was fun as every time you picked it up you would poke another hole in it it was so fragile !) I got it to the stage where it would hang together fairly well and glassed the hull which has made it like the proverbial "brick one". The rest was very careful sanding of the deck and cabin, (they were ply so fared a bit better) and a lot of little filling bits to get it right.
Nav lights and cabin lights all work from the micro switch board, the curtains are left over Graupner Commodore (1975), I've added a mast, new windows, flag pole, cleats, ladder and handrails. Any ideas as to its manufacturer would be great. I have seen another one on our local "Trade Me" web site recently.

Mystery solved,- it's a 'FAIRACRE 11', Modelmaker plan 709 from the late 50s-60s and not a kit as I had assumed. it had obviously been well built by the original modeller.

Crash Tender Rebuild
Purchased from ebay and as you can see the boat has many problems paint peeling middle roof missing engine seized rudder Broken, but on the plus side the wood is undamaged. The boat comes from the original owner who built from a kit in 1964 And kept in his loft for years, I will post more pictures as rebuild progresses.

this model dont need any introduction because there are thousands upon thousands of these kits were produced and even being produce as I post this this build. I purchased this kit when it was first released in 1963. there was a discount store that sold anything from appliances to plastic models. I went in there one day to see what they have, there to my delight and surprise there was a stock table that must have had atleased a 100 or more of these kits they were sold for $11.95 but the only way the store could sells these they marked them down a little more then half price, the sale tag on the stock table and the kit was $ 4.95 with a steal of a deal I couldn,t refuse. I bought 4 of them for $ 20.00. the kit was a typical gimic model for that day it was designed and ran on 6 D cell flashlight batteries, opperating a cam gear box that opperated the 5 inch closed mount turrets torpedo tubes and the twin screws. Also in the kit you a choice of courses that could be set if desired useing a cam that worked off the gear box. 10 years ago I scuttled the gearbox and modernized it with up to date RC she runs on a 6 volt dumas electric motor with a gear reduxction turning two screws and speed control Boats

You say you bought 4? What happened to the other 3? I am always amazed at the deals available outside the UK. Perhaps if similar deals were available there would be more budding young modellers!
Please keep posting pictures of your models. it would be useful if you could also give size details as models to sail need to fit into our cars.

    Ahoy Dave
Thank you for your reply I am honered. The other 3 were given away as Christmas presents. Deals of yesteryear are over with the price of plastic his 10 to 20 times higher then the price I paid back in that day. What once was a retail price of $11.95 is now $100.00 and going up.The details of the kit it is scaled in a odd scale of 1/225 giveing you a model length of 36 inch,s just under a meter. the kit came with a gearbox that opperated the turrets, torpedo tubes and turning the twin screws. in order to sail the selected course, there are 4 cams that ride off the gearbox circle, square figure eight, and straight . this was gimic model there were many in the 1950, through the 1960,s but much seriousness is applied to scale and RC these gimic models are now radio controlled. the insides are quite small to work with. But still large enought to modifiy it to RC opperation. get rid of the relic gearbox and 9.0 electric motor, you need to add a 6 volt motor and gear reduction box. speed controll and a new rudder linkage system. Still today the kit is still worth looking in to. The only modification I made as to the overal perspective of appearence is the Hull I am a retired navy man of 30 years I have a trained eye for destroyers I served on 4 of them. the kits hull from the bridge superstructure to the bow the camber is allwrong useing plastic surgury and sheet plastic that portion of the hull has to be raised up to the proper camber, I also added bilge keels the kit didn,t have them. all kits from the 1950,s throught the 60,s never paid that much attention to scale and detail. not much nit picken in that da neither.

35" Aerokits sea commanda
Hi" fellow model boat members " . I thought I would put some photos of my 1970s restored Aerokits sea commander . it running on a speed 600 motor with a 50 amp speed controller on 7.2 power pack at 4600 mh . finished in Antique Ivory white and Mediterranean blue with a varnished walnut finished deck . I like to take all my rebuilds to my local boating lake which is at Sheringham Norfolk and meet up with my old boat friends . Sheringham is very popular with holiday makers and the local people a like .

Hatch Covers: 34" Crash Tender 1960's refub
I'm currently restoring a 34" Crash Tender and from finished pictures I've seen I was wondering how did people go about making those great hatches.

So I thought I'd have a go, I think it looks about right, well better than before anyway. I hope these pictures help anyone else wondering about rebuild of hatch covers.

Used a small amount of basswood and balsa.

RANZOW BUILD
Bought this kit from Cornwall models ,great fun to build and fairly easy ..At the moment I am in the process of motorising all the move-able parts,Crane rotate and lift lower,Thruster and lighting..My mate from work is a spark and shows me how "to do it " electrically or Im lost. The relay is home made and powers the Bow Thrusters if anyone wants to make one of their own I have a few better pictures to show the wiring in detail . Most will know of this site but if not you can get some excellent items for your ship builds with a good quick service my home made relays switches etc come from here

Start of rebuild old 34 Inch Fire Boat
1. The sorry state of the Hull on the Fire Boat. Purchased from Ebay about 6 months ago, only now just started working on refurbishing it, it was covered in car body filler.

2. After about 2 weeks of very hard work it looks much better. it is running on a Johnson 600 size motor and 6v Gel Battery for its first sail at the Cwmbran Model Society tomorrow, so I hope that is will be OK. it does not appear to be an Aeroits model as the cabins remove from the hull. Not just the Cabin tops. I will try and supply some action photo's later.

It is a kit made by Norstar I have one they are a bit stronger than an aerokits so a bit more weight they sail well mine was converted to twin screw.

Kitshack make one as a kit, off Ebay, uses balsa chines so much easier to shape in with the bulkhead profile. The Norstar I built when I was 12 had horrible 9mm thick chines that had to be planed to shape they were so hard.

HMM Wavemaster
I took advantage of some nice weather to take my Wavemaster out for a spin this afternoon. She's around 58 years old, I bought her from the son of the original builder and have tried to keep it as original as possible so converted from IC to electric, repainted the lower hull, new stainless inner propshaft, made some handrails and fitted the lights. it was very dirty but has cleaned up a treat. I'm running a Darke Horse 700 with a 7.2v 4300Ah battery for these pictures but have the facility to use either one or two sticks, run time today over 30min with some to spare so I'm well pleased! it's a gorgeous classic boat.
