I've been building this Billings kit for some years now. [laid the keel in 2007 !!] but I'm slowly getting there. I've just recently joined this Website so not sure if this is the correct place to post some pictures of this build plus a yacht and steam launch. Tortola at rear, Curlew in foreground.
Tortola plank (Balsa, tissued and dope) on frame, the keel and bulkheads from 10mm plywood. it has a small electric motor fitted but will have sails as well. Curlew from the Eezibuilt range. Material ply wood, Some of it from fruit crates.

This is my newest project an Ebay buy of a delapidated HSL possibly used to advertise Model boat insurance at some time maybe 50 years old !. I have removed all broken, out of scale and incorrect items, removed old repairs and internal engine mounts. Superstructure is not too accurate but good enough to keep. I have noticed the keel is slightly twisted so will have to try and rectify that and the rear deck is going to be removed also as the adhesive is soft and pliable and there is no rigidity in the build aft of the superstructure. I intend fitting 2 x 12v johnson 600 type brushed motors as the original had 2 props. I have plenty of photos of the external layout but lack any detail of the open bridge 😟 . I think this will be a difficult project to complete hope I do it justice

Still fitting out, at first stable but disappointedly slow on 3 blade prop, powered by a Johnson 600, but after a loan of a 40mm twin bladed nylon Prop, of she went at ssspppeedd, final session is when we re tried her with original tweaked 3 blader, not quite as fast but an Improvement,even better when we changed it for an opposite handed similarly tweaked prop, as we realised ESC was set up to run better that way

Glad you like it, unfortunately, just had a message from Ethrow club, that they are banning fast electrics boats, after a number of complaints from public, about wildlife being harried by someone sailing their speedboat at them. I am not one of them try always to run in empty water, when at all possible. Need to check what they class as fast, or head to local canal and its weeds for my next speed rush.

Pine plank on frame, 2 channel radio with a Lego 9volt drive unit as sail winch controlled each way by servo and micro switches, the deck is planked on a thin ply sub-deck and deck openings are sealed with Vaseline. The deep keel slides up into a box through the keel and secured with a bolt.

A boat after my own heart! Looks really good. Like the level of detail, even if you can't see it on the water. Which sails are controlled by the winch?
How successful is the sailing peformance with all that sail area aft?

Just to tell you that I really like your minI Schooner and it seem to sail well also- I have often toyed with the idea of building a footie but so far hav'nt got around to it - keep up the good work

Hi, Thanks. Go for the footy! While this was fun to build there aren't that many days when I get a good sail out of this one. The wind close to the water is very awkward and models need to be tall (in proportion to the length) which makes 'scale' models indifferent sailors. Still worth building but a footy (in all its forms) provides a greater range of good sailing conditions.
I have a scale footy Thames Sailing Barge (scratch built to my own design) and while good it to can't compete with Footy Class boats for the variety of conditions that are good for sailing.

I built this one about 3 years ago she is built at 1/24th scale 50"long and is a plank on frame hull , scratch built using lime wood planking and 9mm ply for the frames and keel, the rest is birch ply of various thicknesses.
she has a 12volt cooling fan motor driving a 4" prop,and has a 12volt 48amp hour battery ,plus some lead for ballast,with working lights and revolving radar scanner

HI Ralph we have a launchung crane at our club so it is not really a problem with size and weight, most of my big tugs actually weigh less than 30lbs without the battery and ballast, I use 46amp hour gel cell batteries where possiblt and then trim with lead blocks ,the Atlantic Cock has her battery plus 3 x3lb lumps of lead so she goes into the cradle light, then is loaded and launched mechanicaly simples really and no bad backs. Well fellas, Sucess the boat performed pretty well, similar performance to the motor which burnt out, but without any drama. Checked the temperature of the motor occasionally, and it seemed warm but not excessive. The battery is a 7amp lead acid (Motorbike type) and gave well over an hour running time.
Unusual feature of the boat, is that being big (46") the wash is considerable.
