Waterline!

On my second try!
I have placed the waterline.
In it's correct position!

Now all I have to do.
Is work on the top of the waterline!
Which would be above the waterline.
And also the bulwark!

This I'll do in a day or so!
Bad weather on it's way!
And I can't spray!

I had ordered some Flat Black paint.
From Hornby but, I don't like it!
After using it I saw brush strokes!

So, I'm going to use BT43 Flat Black, rattle tin!
I've used it before!
It leaves a nice matt finish!
Which is what I want!

Smit Nederland Slow Progress!

I was going to paint the top of the hull.
But, I have decided not to spray the top!
Instead I've ordered Tamiya Flat Black!
And I'm going to brush on the paint!

As the weather has turned for the worst!

I've used Tamiya paints before.
And they give a good finish!

I'm just hoping the paint doesn't have any brush strokes!
If so going to have to wait.
And give it a spray!!!

    Hi Mouldbuilder,

You may say you are rubbish at painting!
Not from what I see of your past builds!
    They look great to me!

    Hope my painting come out.
As good looking as your builds!

    Cheers, Ed

She looks good so far Ed. I too have “fun” with painting, sometimes it’s a fairly easy process, other times I get real, real good at sanding down the first coat and “licking my calf over”😁

Top of the Hull!

It's quite windy here where I live!
But, today I was able to spray the top of the hull!

A few days ago.
I tried to use Tamiya flat black paint.
But, I had the same problem as I did with the Humbrol flat black paint!

No matter how many coats I put.
The paint just didn't look right!

Anyway I decided to spray today as the winds.
Were a bit still!

So, having sprayed the top of the hull.
Now it looks very nice!
A good even coat!

Tonite, I'll spray the main cabin!
I hope the wind stay down!

    Hi Martin,

I minus well have been using a wire brush!
    No matter what I did!
    It just didn't look right!

    Spraying was the only choice!
    To correct this little problem!

    Looks just right!
    Just what I wanted!!!!

    Cheers, Ed

Rudder Linkage!

Does anyone know where I can source?
Rudder Linkage as the Smit Nederland.
Doesn't come with any!

The rudder linkage has to be 4 mm bore?
With set screws preferably!

I also have to connect two rudders as well!

Anyone know???

    Hi all,

Thanks for the hints and questions!

I have ordered rudder linkage from.
Cornwall Model Boats and some linkage from China!
Linkage to be used to connect.
    The port and starboard rudders!

Hull completed!

Slow progress, but the top of the hull is now painted!
The main cabin is all painted! You can't tell from the last picture.
But the main cabin is painted white now!
I also used pin stripping around the Bulwark!
To simulate the white stripe that goes around the Bulwark!

    Hi Doug,

I think I'll have the Maiden of the Brooklyn first!
Smit Nederland won't be ready for a while!

    Cheers, Ed

PS. Crew members have to be ordered soon!

Float Test!

Today I did the old float test!
In the tub of course!

It took about 7 lbs of weight.
To bring the Smit to her Waterline!

I left her in the water for a few hours!
And not a drop of water in the bilge!

Final Supplies! OK, almost Final Supplies!

The Smit is just a big money pit!

I finally ordered the rest of the supplies.
I needed to complete the Smit Nederland Build!

And I still need miniature wire.
Which I'll use on her mast!

But, I'll probably need something else!

OK, supplies received are:

Two 12 volt smokers and fuse connectors!
And various other connectors as well!

Also Miniature LED's in various colors!

PS. when you only have one source.
For smokers be prepared to pay handsomely for them!

My smokers cost me $105.oo!
And I needed two..........

My total was $270.oo

NO, the wife never saw the Bill!!!!😂🤣

    Hi Michael,

    I sourced my smokers from:

    Harbor Models in California, USA!

    https://www.harbormodels.com/smokegenerator.html

But as the smokers come with smoke liquid.
They can't be exported to England!

But, they are very good smokers!
I have their medium smokers and their small smokers!

I haven't tested the small smokers yet.
But, I'm sure they'll work great!

My Smit Nederland build will have independant throttling!
And each motor will have a smoker connected!
There being two motors in total!

But, I must admit they are pricey.
    But, Well worth the price!

    Oh, here in the US!
I've only been able to find one source for smokers!

    Cheers, Ed

Bulwark!

Today, I'm painting the bulwark!
It takes about three coats.
Of paint to cover the Bulwark!

Not sure why but, I started on her Starboard side!

So, far so good!
The three coats are just right!
Next will be her Port side!
Then her bow then stern!

A bit of Painting!

OK, with Corona creating havoc!
The wife and I have stayed home!

So, I've been painting the Smit Nederland!
But, Still taking my time with the build!

I still have the Funnels and the Main Mast to assemble!

And I'm going to take my time with her rails.
As they have a lot of bends and turns!

There's a few areas on the main deck.
That have to be completed.

Also the tow winch has to be assembled!
See I purchased a miniature geared motor.
Which I'm going to use to motorize the tow winch!

But, one step at a time!
Slowly, slowly I'll build the Smit!

    Ed,
Thanks for detailed response on the paint, great information. White stripe looks good, I've found that the auto pinstripping works well too.
