I had glued the mast of the Smit!
But, after looking at it over and over!
I decided it wasn't straight enough!
But, what to do about it?
So, I carefully scribed away the glue.
That was holding it in place!
And carefully broke the glued pieces!
Then realigned the mast!
So it would be straight up!
I think the mast looks better now!
As you can see from the before and after pictures!
It's much better now.......
PS. Sorry about the blurry picture!
Not sure what happened.......

Hi Ed!
my winch and the anchor windlass are directly from the kit. Pretty complicated, but I succeded in putting them together at last. They do nothing - just sit there. Although their rolls do spin freely. Gives me some sense of ”functionality” LOL!
I try to learn how to post a picture from my pad - I cannot upload from my photo app...

The mast of the Smit Nederland.
Is glued to a support that separates the two funnels!
There is nothing really to glue on to!
So, I glued it to the support.
Then I placed some Epoxy on to the support and the mast.
This I hope will reinforce the mast!
Next I will run the wires from the running lights.
The wires will run down the funnels.
And thru the bottom of the main cabin!
This will be done after I prime and paint the mast and funnels!
Next I'll build the tow winch!
I had thought of making a working a working winch.
But, I'm not sure if my idea will work!
So, I may have to settle for a static winch!

I was trying to figure out.
A better way to support the Mast!
But, the piece that's used as the support.
Is it's self flimsy, But, I didn't want to distract from the actual details of how the mast goes placed on the support!
So, Epoxy was my solution!
So, after the model is completed!
I'll have to protect it as best a I can!
I figure I'll have to apply a bit of social distancing.
For my Smit!
Have you ever had to work on something.
And needed two sets of hands!
Well, running the wires on the Smit's Funnels!
I had to ask for the wife's help!
I had 8 wires to run and not enough hands!
Anyway, I accomplished my task!
There are 8 wires for the Smit's Mast!
There being 2 grounds!
So, I ran the grounds on port side and the starboard side!
I ran the forward Mast lights on the port side!
And the Aft lights on her Starboard side!
Making 2 circuits which I'll control from a 4 channel controller! I may put more lights!
This is why I'm using a 4 channel controller!
Please see picture to right!
The Smit has other running lights.
Which, I may put on the model!
I think it would add more details to it!
Next, I will complete the Funnel and Mast Assembly!
Getting it ready for Priming!
I ordered the actual paints that are needed.
To complete the Funnel and Mast Assembly!
The paints are Enamel based!
And according to what I've read.
On the tins they take about six hours to dry!
So, no touching!!! LOL
Oh, I neatly ran the wires under the Mast Support!
I'll also cover the wire with tape.
Which will be painted coving the wires!
Hiding the wires from view!
This being advice from Martin555!
Thanks, Martin!

And ready to prime!
I'll prime tomorrow as it's raining at the present time!
I'm currently waiting for some alligator clips with wire attached!
I'm going to use them to pretest the lights on the Mast!
I plan on doing a full connection!
That is full RC setup!
Just to see if all goes well!
If it doesn't they'll be a few choice words said!
Anyway Fingers Crossed! 🤞🤞🤞!

I'm sure most of you have seen.
The Rubber Hoses that protrudes form the Funnels!
These are the connections.
I made to connect the 12 volt smokers.
I'm going to use on the Smit!
See, I purchased 2 smokers.
They have 1/4" outlets for the smoke.
So, I decided to use Rubber Hoses!
The Rubber Hoses being a 1/4"ID!
The Smit will have independent throttles!
So, 2 Smokers are to be used!
About the Rubber Hoses!
I've seen where 1/2 brass pipe.
Was used for the smokers!
But, I didn't want a lot of smoke coming out of the model!
So, I got small 12 volt smokers!
I think this will look more true to scale.
Than a 1/2" brass pipe coming out of the Funnels!
I've seen it and they look awful!!!
I on the other hand.
Am only using the 1/4" Hose!
So, It should look great!!!!

I think tomorrow will be a perfect day.
To to run my LED test!

But, will take time to do so!

The Smit uses different size brass rods.
For it's Guy Wire and Handrails!
Note: I'm speaking about the top handrail!
The Guy Wire supplied in the kit.
Is a coil of brass wire!
So, what I did was order some Guy wire.
Which is straight and not a coil!
.5 mm brass rod ordered!
Oh, all my brass supplies were purchased from amazon!
The brass supplies I purchased are longer pieces of brass!
The kit comes with shorter pieces of brass!
which would mean I would have to make a lot of solder splices!
So, for instance her port and star board.
Handrails are the longest pieces.
On the main cabin!
Oh, the brass pieces I ordered are 300 mm long!
PS.
Hi RON, from Canada!
The Mast and Funnel assembly.
Does have support from Guy wires!
So, the Mast isn't just on top of the Funnel support by itself!
There are 3 Guy wires supporting the Mast!
I haven't gotten there yet!
But, will soon enough............

Spent nearly 40 years on the mines here in South Africa and have Silicosis only a slight touch. But smoking didn't help either!
Here's a possible useful link for the guys who like brass pulleys and turnbuckles. Proctor Aircraft they supply R/C models that take a lot of work (Some of them go back to Bleirot's Monoplane) So all sorts of stuff available. They used to have agents all over the world but they are good at what they do!
I had thought of controlling the Smit.
Using my Futaba F-14!
I had thought of using the Channel Expanders!
To Expand the F-14 to 16 Channels.
But, the Expanders failed!
The F-14 couldn't be expanded!
Leaving me to just 8 channel!
I did how ever purchase 2 remote controllers
Which can be used to expand.
How many channels the Smit has!
But, I know that the Arduino.
Can be programed to control.
Lights at different times
Which is what I'd like to do!
And who has educated me on this!
None other than Martin555!
Who has an Arduino in his Cottesmore model!
So, now I am thinking of learning.
About the Arduino boards!
And incorporating one in my Smit model!
So, what do you think?
Should I take more time learning Arduino?
Or should I just continue the build.
As the Smit as intended to be used.
Using the F-14 Controller?
Please, let me know your opinion?
Cheers, Ed
Thanks, But I sent them back!
To where I had purchased them from!
As, Try as I could!
Couldn't get them to work!
I even had some of the knowledgeable guys on here.
Help me with the setup!
But, nothing worked at all!
So, I sent them back!
And was given a full refund!
I was toying around with the idea of using an Arduino!
But, I've spent enough time on the Smit build!
I may not use it after all!
Maybe I'm over thinking.
What I want to achieve on the Smit build!
As I am working with my 3D printer!
I had stopped working on the smit!
But, maybe in a few day time.
I will continue to build my Smit!
But, for now it's Mothballed!
I have a feeling soon.
I'll continue to build the Smit
I'm getting the bug.......

Hi All,
It's been a while!
I thought I would do something on the Smit!
So, using me 3D Printer!
I found some files on Thingyverse!
I tried to scale them as best as I could!
The pallets are about 35mm squared!
And the drums stand about 25mm tall!
I don't have a lathe.
But, I do have a 3D printer!
Thanks to Martin555 who recommended.
That I should make the drums on a pallet model!
To add to the Smit Nederland build!
These, I'll place somewhere on the deck of the Smit!
The weather here is really rainy!
We have some storms down the coast!
It's just really wet all around!
So, I'll have to wait a few days before I can spray paint!
I have picked the colors that I will be using!
I'm hoping they look nice!

"I don't think I could charge for them!" can't see why not Ed, I used to own a crafting shop, and sold rubber stamps and the like for making greetings cards, but it was OK for the customers to use said stamps for images and sell them, so I don't see that you have a problem, thingyverse is available world wide, so I don't envisage them knocking on your door for license fee's😊
Thanks, It took some doing!
But, the mast is now centered!
Cheers, Ed
